Where do you park your car? I'll gladly steal it and return it to you for a finder's fee (or buy it "hot" and do the same).

I see the point you are trying to make. However, unlike this mask, my car has a VIN number, registration history, and a bill of sale in my possession.

This museum in Missouri possibly saved this mask by buying it. It might have ended up buried in some private collection lost to the public, and Cairo, forever. For that should they be punished to the tune a ½ million?

Granted, I don’t know how easy or hard it would have been to review the history of this mask before buying it but I hardly think that if the Museum of Cairo is so disorganized that it can’t keep its property from disappearing that it should be able to rely on the budgets of the worlds museums to recover these pieces without compensating them.

Your point is understood as well. Unfortunately the only legal recourse the museum has is to sue the dealer for a refund. It's a settled legal principle that one cannot obtain title to a stolen item, even if the transaction itself is legal and both parties act in good faith.

Antiquities Minister says Egypt will not abandon its right to “Ka-nefer-nefer” mask

Saturday, 14 June 2014

Egypt lost the pharaonic “Ka-nefer-nefer” mask after the US appeals court refused the challenge submitted by the US federal government against St. Louis Art Museum because it failed to submit the documents which prove Egypt’s ownership of the mask.

Accordingly, the court issued its decision that the mask inside the St. Louis Art Museum isn’t going anywhere.

Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim said that he will resort to the private sector in the United States to practice pressures on St. Louis Art Museum according to the agreements signed in this regard. He stressed that Egypt will not abandon its right to “Ka-nefer-nefer” mask.
