Muslim rage over Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad has reached Christian Reformed missionaries in northern Nigeria, forcing them to flee for safety.
Dave and Jan Dykgraaf, of Grand Rapids, who have worked in Nigeria for nearly 40 years, and an Iowa couple evacuated Sunday from a remote area in the country's northwestern region.
The Dykgraafs, fellow missionaries Larry and Rose Van Zee and 15 Christian Nigerian families drove six hours to the city of Abuja after learning of killings and the torching of a CRC church in their region.
Dave Dykgraaf e-mailed CRC officials in Grand Rapids that he had seen a Catholic compound nearly destroyed by rioters in the town of Kontagora, about 35 miles away from where he and his wife teach at a Bible school. He heard reports that "many people were killed and burned," he wrote.
At a village closer by, he saw threats posted at the houses and shops of Christians who moved there from the south: "You Christians go back to your land. If you do not go back we will kill you."
A CRC official said the missionaries made the right move.
"From what they saw just two days earlier, where there were many deaths they witnessed as close as 60 kilometers away, we're certainly not questioning why they evacuated," said Ron Geerlings, program director for Africa for CRC World Missions.
