I don't hate trains--I just like my own automobile of choice: FORD!!!
The building of the Interstate led to the collpase of the old railroad system, but that had already begun when they highway system began to be developed afrter WWII. It was largely the fault of the railroads, who couldn't match up to the trucking indistry and hated passanger service anyway. They could have negotiated a deal whereby they kepr passanger service while the state picked up the cost of mainatining railroads and bridges etc and had them paid for by gas taxes. Don't think they did.
