Ill take a stab at it....
The uncertainty of no marriage - IE Shacking up
Can have a stabilizing effect on expectation's - IE two mature individuals are forced to communicate to work out issues
and hence effort to maintain the relationship - IE there is a commitment to keep the comfort level stable and flourishing.

Please explain this as I am trying to parse this sentence but I don't get your meaning. It's diffucult to summarize in one sentence, what volumes have been written about.
Human nature tends to be self-centered, and most marriages, successful or not, has an owner and an ownee, not always the same sex.
Marriage make this possible. If the ownee is free to leave at any time, there is less of a tendency for the worst devils of human nature to overcome the owner.
