Anti-war veterans will visit San Rafael High School this week to brief students on their experiences in the military. The event, sponsored by several peace groups, will feature three panelists: Aidan Delgado, a former Army reservist from Sarasota, Fla., who served in the Iraq war; Aimee Allison, a former combat medic in the Army Reserves from Oakland, who was assigned to a Sunnyvale hospital during the Persian Gulf War; and Pablo Paredes, a former Navy enlistee from San Diego, who was court-martialed for refusing orders during the Iraq war.
The three plan to share their objections to the Iraq war and military recruiting at public schools at the so-called "Truth and Lies About Joining the Military" forum on Thursday.
...The veterans will be joined by David Crawford, a Tamalpais High School 11th-grader who created a Web site "nochildleftstanding.org," which opposes No Child Left Behind Act requirements that schools provide military recruiters with students' contact information.
Last year, Crawford collected hundreds of signatures from students, authorizing the school to withhold their names from the Pentagon - an option permitted under the No Child law.
The forum is intended to inform students about military recruiting practices and the realities of war, said Marg Piaggio, co-chairwoman of the Marin Peace and Justice Coalition, which is sponsoring the event with another anti-war group, Veterans for Peace of San Francisco, and Marin County Hope Inc., a local organization that educates students about federal military requirements.
"The recruiters don't tell the truth because they just want to get people to join the military; they are using lures to get kids in to get their numbers up," Piaggio said.

...meanwhile across town, the ROTC is getting kicked off of campus in the name of fairness and balance...
Yeah, kids, you don't wanna be like our folks in uniform. You wanna be like Pablo Paredes, who was thrown out of uniform as unfit to wear the thing... you wanna be like this parade of sinsemilla-sucking deserters....

..Remember how the Marin County Board of Education responded to the first anniversary of September 11, 2001? They produced a curriculum which (in part) told grade school children "Currently, it is unknown exactly who launched this attack, and no terrorist group has taken responsibility. There is widespread suspicion surrounding Osama bin Laden." The document also included links to leftist organizations and a quote from Trotsky, on the Red Army use of terrorism as a "necessary evil to promote the worldwide cause of workers and as a response to military actions of counterrevolutionaries and Western Powers."

Gee, what a pity that the murderer of Mike Spann is still in jail and can't come give his recruiting speech. The injustice cries out....

And yet, 30 years down the road, many of these anti-war types will be boasting to their grandkids about how brave they were in the war. Kids they entice to avoid service may also be boasting to their grandkids about their exploits in the war.
Phony war heroes are always abounding many years after.
You're correct!
If they had been taught history they might realize that the Armed Forces are not a social club and uncomfortable things may arise.
Does anyone know if attendance is mandatory for students?
You know, I don't usually cuss on this forum, but this rates a solid...
WTF!!!
Thanks for posting.

Funnies aside, most people who entered his office couldn't qualify for the military, even with a waiver.
Washington State, near the campus in Seattle, was where he was a recruiter. Take that as you like it.
This forum is not intended to *inform* students. If it were, they would also have speakers who supported the war and military recruitment on campus. This forum is to *indoctrinate* the kids, not inform them.
Please, do let us get our terms straight!
Oh, you got that right. You've probably read "Stolen Valor." There was also a conference in 200(3? 4?) at one of the colleges in Boston on the legacy of the Vietnam veteran and how it had been damaged by phonies. I attended, even though I am not a VN vet. I think we had six MOH recipients, including the very private Dave Dolby and Jon Cavaiani, whom I hadn't seen since he disappeared into the "Dark Side" about 1984.

What? You mean the Marines don't have a Clud Med?
I have heard the US has a "Club Gitmo" and it's very affordable.
