Despite misgivings about Schwarzenegger's direction, many of the GOP rank and file said they still viewed him as the party's best hope for exerting influence in Sacramento, where Democrats hold unassailable margins in the Legislature.

In a floor speech, Michael McSweeney of San Diego told delegates that "winning is more fun than losing" and described the attempts to distance the party from Schwarzenegger as misguided.

"It's about how can we spank the governor and form the circular firing squad," he said.

When asked about infighting in the GOP, he paraphrased a saying of former President Reagan.

"If 80% of people are your friends, then you don't have 20% enemies, you have 80% friends," he said. "So I mean, that's really the bottom line."

You should have heard Tom this morning on KSFO dancing a fine line, and in fact, crossing over it a few times and criticizing the Gub and his spending proposals and actions on appointments , etc. He has a stronger stomach or at least gag reflex than most of us, it would seem..

Wrap yourself tight in Tom's skirt, he may be the only Repub in state office next year. But it isn't like he isn't running a big risk himself backing a moderate republican masquerading as a liberal most of the time or is it the other way around. ;-).

Norm did you hear the latest rumor?

Recently, a group named the Organization for Fairness and Equality pulled papers to start an initiative drive to legalize same sex marriage in California. Ordinarily no big deal in California were it not for peculiar event today.

A large fellow in a trench coat was hanging around the lobby of the Hyatt in Sacramento asking guests to sign the petition. None could easily recognize the man because of the large coat, a fedora pulled down almost to his brow line and the stylish sunglasses worn indoors. Many, however, sensed a familiarity, as thought they had seen him recently. Most thought he spoke with a European accent.
