Character Is Key in Governor Campaign (California)
LAT ^ | Feb. 28. 2006 | Michael Finnegan

Conflict sharpens as Westly and Angelides promote themselves as most trustworthy.

With little else to dispute, the two Democrats vying to replace Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are tussling over the most basic of voter questions: Whom can you trust?

At campaign stops around the state, each of the Democrats — state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly — has been touting himself for weeks as the one who holds truest to his convictions. This week, millions of Californians will get their first glimpse of the rivalry as the two launch three months of nearly statewide television advertising.

The candidates are not alone in questioning the governor's character: Democrats' allies in organized labor have resumed the attacks on Schwarzenegger that they used to help kill his ballot measures last fall.

"I was the first statewide candidate to come out and say I fully support marriage equality, period," Westly told a crowd at Ramone's Bakery and Cafe in Eureka. "I say this because I believe I am a progressive candidate for governor, but more than that, Democrats need to stand up and say what we believe."

And an excerpt about Angelides from an earlier LA Times article:

"Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes. "

So whom can you trust: Arnold & McClintock or Angelides & Westley?

I guess you didn't notice that both Westley and Angelides support homosexual marriage -- remember, the bill that Arnold VETOED. Angelides or Westley will sign it in a minute and you can be sure that the Dem legislature will pass it again.

Also Angelides already said he WILL raise taxes.

And you still can't tell the difference between Arnold and these left wing communist Dems? Or do you REALLY want the Dems in power? That is the only logical explanation. NOBODY can be that naive.

The danger is that voters could be left wondering what Schwarzenegger's core beliefs are.

One of the few problems with the gang that Freepers don't face.

Thank God for little favors.

Oh, I'd say you're a good example of naive..

This is a conservative forum, after all, not a liberal one.

Looking at the track record of the Gub hardly , it hardly stands out as conservative much less republican in may instances and actions, unless you consider the New Majority owners of the ca Gop as good solid republicans and conservative agenda driven..

we wouldn't want to talk about the domestic partners legislation the gUb willingly signed,, now would we?

do you REALLY want the Dems in power?

Reminds me of a pot calling the kettle black. A more reasoned question, considering the venue, should be:

Do we really want a liberal in power, whether Democrat or Republican?

It matters not to some folks here , it seems, notice how FO chooses not to respond to my first comment, just so they get their invites to the Hot Tub gatherings,.

Who cares about social issues, they're in it for the money and power. Where have we seen that before.?

"This is a conservative forum"

So why are you promoting the election of leftist, "progressive" Democrats in a conservative forum?

"Schwarzenegger is becoming a Democrat again, It's a good sign for him and a bad sign for the Democratic Party. He gets it. He's learned his lesson. ... He's running back, not even to the center -- I would say center-left.''
--Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco

So much for Arnold. I'm probably voting for the Libertarian Olivier this year.

That won't work Norm. The CRP keeps denying if ever happened. Poof. It just never happened.

Earlier today a thread was posted regarding the failure of Schwarzenegger's little law to impress the feds. The poster kept insisting the thread involved a related subject but would not even acknowledge that Schwarzenegger attempted to empower homosexual partners with the full privileges of traditional marriage.

lol.. why are you even here?

I can count your converts on 2 fingers, guess which 2?

Anyone who was already a Gubinator fan doesn't count, all most of them want is a pardon anyway.

A vote for anyone but Arnold is a vote for the Dems.

I guess the third party types haven't learned their lesson, even after they gave us 8 years of Bill Clinton, by voting for Perot.

So why are conservatives promoting the election of leftist, "progressive" Democrats on a conservative forum?

A much more accurate and honest question would be:

Why is the CRP promoting a liberal on a conservative forum?

Arnold or Angelides.

PICK ONE!

Of course you already have, as you said a number of times: Angelides.

yes arnold vetoed the homo bill, b/c he stuck his finger in the wind and knew which way it was blowing for the time being. If it was blowing the other way he would have not vetoed.

I have become so salty about my state, I would almost rather had davis stay in office and maybe given the chance to someone else at a later time. It's all smoke and mirrors...

on a serious note, I see no light on the horizon for conservatives in CA, and even the US for that matter. This country is turning liberal at a dangerous way...

A vote for anyone but Arnold is a vote for the Dems.

You only seek to put thoughts and words into others mouths and minds and then claim that is what and who they are for. Your simplistic little mind and this approach is so feeble and you are unwilling to acknowledge your own failings here , it is almost amusing to watch.

You're desperate attempts at hyping your side and berating anyone who doesn't march lockstep, FO, speak to the weaknesses of your movement at its core and why the base is sick of your drivel and the GUb's..

Cry all ya want but this state has survived dem Gubs and it will again. What it can't survive is someone who runs as one thing and governs as the complete opposite.

But for the New Majority and folks like you blindly or otherwise working for them..

it's

Just Win, Baby! Don't sweat the details!
