Ah, the old 'Attack the messenger' ploy. Grow up.

Yes, your post sound SOOOOO much more adult.

I notice you didn't refute one single point I made, just flamed me for a typo. Such an intellectual titan.

Privacy is a good idea. No one gives out their personal address to strangers. Why would you want to broadcast your IP to the rest of the world?

You can not help but "broadcast" your IP, every time you connect to a web server, mail server, or Even FR. A router or firewall does not make you invisibal, and your IP is still logged everywhere you go on the net.

The question was specific to dial-up, where you are not on line at the same IP all the time. The script kiddies generally do not bother to attack dial-up anymore because there are much fatter targets to shoot at.

Never the less, some measure of protection is warranted, if nothing more elaborate than a software firewall.

1) Perhaps a good emergency last ditch approach when you have to use a public terminal such as a machine in a library or internet cafe.
2) You sure can't get much work done that way but it might be suitable for login purposes.

Great minds...I thought of the usefulness of random entry in the same two situations.

Since my family owns 4 Macs, I wasn't sharp enought to worry about total infestation.
