You can not help but "broadcast" your IP, every time you connect to a web server, mail server, or Even FR. A router or firewall does not make you invisibal, and your IP is still logged everywhere you go on the net.
The question was specific to dial-up, where you are not on line at the same IP all the time. The script kiddies generally do not bother to attack dial-up anymore because there are much fatter targets to shoot at.
Never the less, some measure of protection is warranted, if nothing more elaborate than a software firewall.
Great minds...I thought of the usefulness of random entry in the same two situations.
Since my family owns 4 Macs, I wasn't sharp enought to worry about total infestation.
