Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's supporters on Sunday beat back an attempt at the state Republican Party convention to torpedo the governor's policy agenda.
Delegates in San Jose rejected a move to put California Republicans on record as being against Schwarzenegger's plans to increase the minimum wage, manage the state budget and sell $68 billion in bonds to upgrade the state's roads, reservoirs, levees and schools.
The complaints make for bad government and even worse politics, the governor's backers warned.
"If we're divided, the opposition wins,'' said Michael McSweeney, a delegate from San Diego, who opposed the anti-Schwarzenegger effort. "This isn't about policy. This is about how we can spank the governor and form the circular firing squad.''
But opponents of the governor's plans argued that they were only calling for the support of traditional Republican values, values they believe the governor has ignored.
"These are pretty basic principles,'' said Michael Schroeder, a former party chairman from Orange County. "All we're talking about are things like a balanced budget and the idea of not increasing bonded indebtedness. I think we all believe in these basic Republican principles.''

So even if he spends like a Democrat (or the president) Conservatives DARE NOT SAY he should align himself with the platform. The platform should align itself with the politician.
Anything else and you are a traitor to the party comrade!
I was at the convention, Duf and Ron Nehring and the other storm troopers think that strong arming the dissent at the convention is a success. If you have to do that then there is no unity.
I was at the CCR meeting that Arnold showed up at and I now know what it looked like when the captain of the titanic showed up and asked if the band can play louder. They stopped all video recording, they wont allow questions. This is not a movie. I will ask questions and if I dont get good answers I will not vote for Arnold.
Michael McSweeney is a CCR liberal plant and he tried to remove me from the CCR meeting with Arnold. What a joke.
All they did was make lots of enemies.
Your report is not comforting. What are the chances of getting any good answers at this point? I find it stunning that they wouldn't support a resolution to balance the budget. That's pretty fundamental, imo, and should be a non-partisan goal of both parties.
I personally think that Republicans are going to get there butts kicked this year.
We are going to have to run this state by initiative process eventually.
