Skeleton in the IRS closet. Alternative tax intended for rich now hits millions

WASHINGTON - Vietnam didn't spark the most constituent anger toward Congress in 1969.

What riled people back then was the fact that 155 of America's super-rich didn't pay a penny in income tax. The resulting tax revolt got Congress to pass the alternative minimum tax to make sure that even the upper crust pays at least a little to Uncle Sam.

Tax revolt may be at hand again.

It's made me furious for years.

People like Teresa Heinz Kerry pay very little tax. People like Teddy Kennedy pay very little tax. But I can't afford offshore investments and high priced tax lawyers, so I get screwed. What really burns me up is that my children are treated as tax loopholes.

Clinton made it a LOT worse, when he put through that major tax increase after promising to lower taxes.

Congress could care less. Otherwise they would eliminate the whole effing tax code and abolish the IRS.

They won't do that though, because it is the ONE thing they can use over and over and over again to keep getting re-elected.

bump--would love to hear from Fr experienced in this new tax bite--maybe tax preparers and tax sufferers alike!

Would like to know--how does the AMT affect people who have been compensated with stock?

But Clinton tried so hard to get the middle class tax cut passed after he promised he would in both his campaigns. I remember clearly in 1993, no it was 1994, no I think it was 1995, maybe it was 1996, wait I think Clinton in 1997, maybe it was 1998 or 1999. When did Clinton try to pass that middle class tax cut?

I just found out I'm getting hit with the AMT for the first time this year. Looks like I will lose the equivalent of about $3k in deductions, and to add insult to injury, I will have to spend many hours figuring out how to give them my money.

If you make $50,000.00 a year you are not considered middle class. Middle class is $24,000.00 to 47,000.00 a year.If your family income is opver 50K and one spouse collects social security, approx %90 is claimed as income and is taxed. I know I pay tax on my social security.

On top of that my Blues Cross went up double what my Cola was. I am making more money and going broke.

Congress could care less. Otherwise they would eliminate the whole effing tax code and abolish the IRS.

The vehicle to make that happen exists.

They won't do that though, because it is the ONE thing they can use over and over and over again to keep getting re-elected.

It is up to us, the electorate to make sure each Congress Critter recognises there is no re-election without eliminating the income tax code and abolishing the IRS.

A Taxreform bump for you all.

If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.

John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.

H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

How can they consider $47,000 the upper limit of "middle class"?

As of 2003, median household money income was $43,318. The inflation rate in 2004 was 3.3%...I'm not sure about the more recent figures, but $43K in 2003 may be the equivalent of $47K (or more) now. So half of the households in the country are "wealthy"?

We're hit for the first time too. AND a lot of ridiculous things in store for '06. Who writes this junk? You can claim home enery savings deductions but you have to deduct it from the base value of the house? Huh? Does somebody really just sit around and say, "oh, I know what's fair. Let's do this." I'm sick of the talk about reform. It'll never happen in my lifetime.
