Quelling A Rebellion (Sundheim/Kingsley mug conservatives at convention)
New West Notes ^ | 02-25-06 | Bill Bradley

Posted on 02/25/2006 7:00:42 PM PST by Amerigomag

Pro-Arnold forces in the California Republican Party (Sundheim, Kingsley, Parsky) took a few more big steps toward tamping down the rebellion on the right this afternoon at the party’s state convention in San Jose. First, state Senator Tom McClintock, the party’s conservative favorite, delivered a very well-received luncheon address in which he extolled the virtues of his “running mate,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. McClintock, who ran a respectably distant third in the 2003 recall election, is running for lieutenant governor.

Then conservative leaders found most of their resolutions criticizing Arnold’s policy positions shot down in the party resolutions committee. The rightists say they had an agreement for resolutions opposing Arnold’s infrastructure bond, budget policies, and minimum wage hike to move to the convention floor tomorrow with only a majority vote required for passage. Instead, the committee sent the resolutions to the floor with a negative recommendation, now requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. Only the rightists’ resolution urging the former action superstar to appoint more Republicans to judgeships moved forward to the floor needing only a majority vote.

“This was a fork in the road,” says ex-state Republican chairman Mike Schroeder as he and other angry conservative leaders expressed their displeasure and lack of support for Schwarzenegger. “He could have allowed a real debate here. He didn’t.”

Looking on with amusement was Democratic strategist Garry South, who quipped, “It seems every even numbered year the Republican Party turns into the Donner Party.”

Chairman Duf Sundheim sees the agreement differently, saying what he agreed to was only an open discussion and that he can’t control what the committee does. The resolutions chairman, he says, told him Wednesday there were not the votes to move the resolutions forward with a positive or neutral recommendation. “I agreed to have debate, it’s in the best interest of the party. That is what I agreed to.”

So the "resolution committee" members endorse irresponsible borrowing, minimum wage hikes and big spending?
Throw the bums out! (to steal a phrase)

Sundheim and Parsky are both liberal garbage that are a disgrace to the Republican Party.

Happy retirement Arnold!

Can you imagine a Democrat Governor throwing out the kinds of bones to Republicans/Conservatives that dearest Ah-nold throws to the 'Rats and the Liberals ? The Democrats would rightly run someone like that out of the party on a rail.

Well, Sundheim is from Chicago, I think; Riordan from New York.
Either a union, or a famous family. ;-)

Perhaps South sees things than Duf refuses to. BTW, did you say (M)ilkNM?

Governor quells party strife in time for S.J. convention (Kate Folmar, Mercury News)

If all goes smoothly for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at the California Republican Party convention that starts today in San Jose, it will not be an accident.

(snip)

With a series of behind-the-scenes moves over the past two months, the governor and his allies appear to have quieted the revolt. The motion to yank the governor's endorsement is expected to be tabled at the convention.

(snip)

A prominent group of well-heeled moderate Republicans, the New Majority, recently announced that its members had endorsed the governor's re-election.

Democratic political strategist Garry South, who is working with Controller Steve Westly in his bid to oust Schwarzenegger, believes that convention harmony will be for display purposes only.

"It's one thing to try to hammer down people so they don't bring resolutions to the convention floor," South said. But, "there's a very dangerous sub-current of discontent and outright anger with respect to the governor. Just because it doesn't happen on the convention floor doesn't mean it isn't happening in the hinterlands. And it is."

But weren't they referring to *a* party, as opposed to *the* Party?

The CAGOP will continue to be largely useless and irrelevant until such time as heads roll, beginning with Dufus Sundheim.

They have now guaranteed themselves absolutely zero conservative support.

Good going, Dufus.

Did you hear Arnold on Meet the Press this morning? He was touting his accomplishments, of which the Sierra Nevada Conservancy was prominently mentioned as "25 million acres" and the "greatest preservation of land in California history." He ducked and twisted and avoided the most direct questions, as usual. The man said "I have very strong principles" but failed to cite one. Just remember... all of those people complaining about his $222 Billion spending/bondage plan are just "confused" because it "isn't spending," "it is investing!"

It replays at 7PM on MSNBC if you can take the punishment.

Actually, I think it is worse than useless and irrelevant. Under his leadership, he is aiding and abetting the liberals. The question is if he is an impostor, doing it intentionally, or just plain ignorant.

Preserves are best for jams and jellys... NOT THE PEOPLE's PRIVATE PROPERTY with investment backed expectations!!!

It's hard to believe he's actually bragging about it after he so harshly criticized the Coastal COMMYMISSION during his Recall campaign... truly strange!!!

What a shallow bastard!!!
