Phoenix has been chosen to host the National Rifle Association's annual convention in 2009, an event expected to attract up to 65,000 people.
The city landed the largest convention in its history, mostly due to a $600 million expansion of the Phoenix Convention Center, a new downtown hotel and a long-standing relationship with the NRA.
The convention delegates are projected to collectively spend as much as $94.3 million during their stay for rental cars, hotel accommodations and meals.
The NRA convention is a key victory for Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and other officials who pushed hard to get public financing for the convention center expansion and a 1,000-room, $350 million Sheraton hotel.
Before the expansion plans, the largest convention in Phoenix drew 15,000 attendees.
Scott White, executive vice president of the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that without those projects, the NRA "never would have considered Phoenix."
Phoenix beat out about a dozen other cities competing for the 2009 convention.
In case you hadn't heard; time to hit your NRA and 2nd Amendment PING LIST.
I understand that President Hillary Clinton will announce early in 2009 that any gathering in Arizona or anywhere else will be considered a conclave of "hate" speech and attendees face federal arrest. Federal Marshalls will be present at the NRA convention. NRA members will be photographed and their identities catalogued for future use by the federal government.
Have you been sneaking sips of the "RED DAWN" Kool-Aide again????
Hey, the one this year, 2006, is in MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. Please attend and enjoy our city.
Heil Hitlery
This won't happen because by 2009 Arizona will be in Mexico.
Truth usually turns out to be stranger than fiction.
But I would like to ask my fellow NRA stalwarts:
Just how does anyone know for a fact that Hillary won't win in '08? Recall that Dukakis lost with 44%, Clinton won with 43%.
Watch Maverick McCain do a Perot on the Republican in '08.
Then hear POTUS Hillary announce, "It's payback time!"
McCain is an ego-maniac. He seriously considered Kerry's offer of the VP in '04 but knew if they lost he'd be finished.
He is pulling out all the stops this time. Given his age it's his last shot. The GOP may just be desperate enough to nominate him. The media loves him.
The GOP needs to know that if McCain is their candidate, millions of conservatives will stay home.
Says who?
Gee, thanx for that morale-boost!
