One should not forget the Carter economy. 16% inflation in a totally stagnant economy with heavy job losses, while he's giving speeching blaming it on our "malaise". I couldn't get job at McDonald's, but did (much) later make a few pennies selling CD's at a bank--for 11% interest!!!!
The stuff about Presidents not impacting the economy is B.S. Anyone alive then knew that the sorry state of country at that time was J.Carter's fault. His lack of leadership brought the country shame and shook its confidence to the core.
