What would you like? I guess you believe depression is in the genes and you can't do anything about it. How about joy, is that in the genes? Laughter? Next they'll be saying being gay is in the genes.

Maybe there is no struggle in life. It's all in the genes and everybody should stop trying and get on medication. Note to all evolution, in 2006 human man discovered that we are powerless over our well being. It's over, the sky has fallen and all life will now stop

Are you trying to be funny?

Homosexual behavior is not exclusive to human beings...but I'm sure you already know that.

Do you think that it is a conscious decision to prefer to be attracted to your own sex?

Actually, we DO believe we can do something about it. If it's in the genes, it's likely a predisposition. As such, it is not a life sentence. And those of us who are depressed, especially those diagnosed as such, really work quite hard at beating it.

It's very rare to find any reputable professional in the field that thinks that a pill, any pill, solves everything. Lifestyle, therapy, diet, supplements, and changing the way one thinks and reacts are all very crucial to 'recovery'. Please don't lump us all as whiny victims.

Agreed. I suppose if there is a depression gene, then I must have a happy gene. Both notions are laughable. Emotionally traumatic events such as the death of my parents aside, I was depressed briefly at one point in my life. It had nothing to do with genes. I was living in BFE without a friend to my name, in social hell. I rectified the problem my moving back to civilization and immediately went back to hunky-dorey.

it's not "all" in the genes, but genes do play an important role in the vulnerability to depression. life events can also play a role.
it doesn't mean we have no power to change our lives, anymore than the role of genes in heart disease or cancer means we should just give up.
real depression is an illness (not just a feeling); joy and laughter are not illnesses.
