While the First Lady is away, her family will -- dine out. While HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON was at a health-care forum in Iowa, PRESIDENT CLINTON and their daughter, CHELSEA, had dinner on Monday night at Galileo, an Italian restaurant in downtown Washington. Along with PAUL NEWMAN and JOANNE WOODWARD, they were guests of LIZ ROBBINS, a Washington lobbyist. Also in the party were ANNE WEXLER, a Presidential aide during the Carter Administration who is chairwoman of the Wexler Group, a lobbying firm, and her husband, JOSEPH DUFFEY, president of American University.

The public schools are losing support because many middle-class parents have rushed to put their children in private schools. In settling on Sidwell Friends, an institution favored by affluent, liberal Democrats in Washington, the Clintons have joined that rush.

Among its (Sidwell Friends School) 1,030 students, Chelsea will find the sons and daughters of lawmakers, business executives and journalists.

In explaining the Clintons' decision to send 12-year-old Chelsea to the Quaker-run Sidwell Friends school, where annual tuition is $10,700, Mr. Clinton's spokesman, George Stephanopoulos, said the family believed it had to do what was best for her education.

As they have done for the last eight years, Mr. Clinton, his wife, Hillary, and their daughter, Chelsea, this week will attend the annual Renaissance Weekend, a retreat at an oceanside resort on the South Carolina island of Hilton Head.

President-elect Bill Clinton is furious at news photographers for luring his daughter's cat outside the grounds of the Governor's mansion and into camera range on Tuesday after he gave specific orders that the pet be left alone, his aides said today. The resulting photographs of the cat, named Socks, appeared in many newspapers around the country today, angering not only Mr. Clinton but also his 12-year-old daughter, Chelsea, said the Governor's assistants, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was in New York sporting what is described as "iceberg-sized bling" on her ring finger.

"It was a gift from her husband," Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Hanley told Tuesday's New York Daily News.

Sources told the newspaper former President Bill Clinton surprised his wife with the ring for their 30th wedding anniversary months ago but she was worried about wearing it.

The diamond is estimated to be at least 3 carats, the newspaper said.

The ring was out in full sparkling glory Monday as the junior senator toured a New York outreach center to talk about President Bush's proposed cuts in early childhood education.
