Buckley's right. The people over there don't seem to want democracy, only chaos. We can't force them to do the right thing. The ball is in their court now. What else can we do for them?

"Buckley's right. The people over there don't seem to want democracy, only chaos."

Their turnout for the 2 elections was very high, even by American standards, so it's probably not accurate to say they don't want democracy.

Agreed. That's the main point to be taken away here. And we have to wonder how long that's gonna take. Right now there are no signs that Iraq is ready to defend and police itself with any kind of pervasive effectiveness.

That's yet to be seen.

I always thought that the US invasion would facilitate the kind of revolution needed to take the country from autocracy to Democracy. The continued American military presence may in fact avoid the rise of an oligarchy or a theocracy.

Chaos paved this nation's road to Democracy as well, they just have the additional problem of a religion that tries to double up as a form of government.

"The people over there don't seem to want democracy, only chaos."

Now, I'm as pessimistic as they come, and pride myself on my crumudgeonliness, and have NO LOVE for the Muslim world, or its people, but I gotta say it seems "the people over there" DO want democracy as they turned out in droves to vote, multiple times at the risk of their lives, a risk I've never (and I'll venture you've never) had to take.

Sure, there are some people over there who crave chaos, but I doubt it is the majority. It's never the majority who want chaos.

I didn't read the posted article, if Buckley's going wobbley let me just say that he was my original hero and that would be a disgrace.

I'm still not ready to give up on that gal with the purple finger. Although I'm way past ready to stuff her chaos craving brothers, cousins, and uncles 'round the globe down the sh*t hole.

we can wipe their butts, dig their latrines, spoonfeed them their meals, and praise them daily with love and then take a bullet the minute we turn our backs. F Islam and the horse it rode in on.

The people over there don't seem to want democracy, only chaos.

What kind of bizarre mentality is it which sees Person #1 attack Persons #2-#10 and concludes blithely "I guess People #1-#10 don't want democracy"? There should be a name for it because it is very widespread.

Which people do you think you're talking about? The handful of people who attacked a mosque, or the millions who voted? Why don't the millions count, and why do the minority of terrorists get to speak for everyone there, in your eyes? Why do you slap this label "the people over there" on the most violent minority?

Snap out of it.

The ball is in their court now. What else can we do for them?

Of course the ball's in their court. We put it there, by overthrowing their dictator. So, yes, the ball's in their court. That was the idea!

I think the remaining thing we can do for them is to have patience and not to give up on them based on silly, bizarre reasoning such as "the democratic majority there are under attack therefore they don't want democracy". Open your eyes and try to see the silent, peaceful majority.

Why does a certain stripe of conservative have no trouble understanding the silent majority concept in his own country but cannot see it in others?
