HOUSTON (Feb. 21, 2006) -- Mayor Bill White signed an official proclamation here marking Feb. 21, 2006, as Marine For Life Day in the city to honor the program that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with transitioning and injured Marines, sailors who serve with Marines and their families.

The Proclamation read in part, “ … The program taps into the network of Marine veterans and Marine-friendly businesses, organizations and individuals that are willing to lend a hand to a Marine who served honorably. The Marine For Life program demonstrates that “Once a Marine, Always a Marine” is not a slogan, but truly part of the Marine Corps ethos.”

Houston City Council Member At Large (Position 3) Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, who was instrumental in assuring the Proclamation came to fruition said, “I was honored to recognize the Marine For Life program and the wonderful strides they have taken to assist veterans returning from military service. Each year, Marine For Life helps more than 600 Houston-area Marines. The Marine For Life program is a vital resource for our city and our country.”

Sgt. Tony Martin, one of the Houston Marine For Life program’s hometown links, added, “The City of Houston has always been a strong supporter of our efforts here with the Marine For Life program, this proclamation just further solidifies our relationship with this hard working Government.”

In addition to enjoying governmental support from the City of Houston, the Houston Marine For Life program benefits from the support of more than 250 employers and mentors who frequently participate in the program-sponsored monthly luncheons with transitioning Marines on the third Thursday of every month.

While addressing the Houston City Council, Martin ended his comments by saying, “The strength of our network in Houston is strong and capable, but it is not just a reflection of our local Marine For Life program; it is more of a direct reflection of the compassion that the City of Houston has for its sons and daughters who exit the Corps.”

And immediately after Martin’s comments, Mayor White concluded the ceremony by stating, “Therefore, I, Bill White, mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim February 21, 2006, as Marine For Life Day in Houston, Texas.”

I always wonder how people in San Francisco--where they ban ROTC from schools, for example--feel about seeing this kind of respect for our nation's protectors. All kidding aside, I don't think everyone there is a total lunatic, and this kind of story, well, I just wonder how it makes them think of their city.
