Driving tip: Don't honk at the cops
cnn ^ | 2-24-06

A Tennessee judge gave a college student a driving lesson in court this week: don't correct the police.

Clay Palmer, a student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, honked his car horn when he saw a policeman turn on blue flashers to pass through a red traffic light. The officer then turned the flashers off after moving through the intersection.

Palmer said officer Matthew Puglise then stopped his patrol car and issued him a ticket for honking his horn for no reason -- a violation of the city noise ordinance.

The charge was reduced to a warning Wednesday when he went before a judge who told him he acted wrongly.

"The horn blowing is not the real problem here, it's that you were trying to correct the police and they didn't need correcting," Judge Russell Bean said.

Palmer left traffic court saying he still believed officers were abusing their authority.

"I see this cop with his blue lights come screeching up beside me and I didn't know what was going on," Palmer said. "Before they got to the next light, I could see they turned their blue lights off."

Officer Puglise said he was helping fellow police track down a speeder when Palmer saw him pass through the red light.

The kid should have told da judge that he was merely honking his horn at a speeder.

Or, that he was just trying to do his part to warn people to stay out of the cop's way. It would be hard to disprove that - and it's probably even (minutely) a part of the overall truth.

Don't truckers do that with their CB's all the time? I mean they do in "Smokey And The Bandit!"

I guess I should feel lucky as I recently honked at an officer who was about to go the wrong direction when chasing a perp. Then I pointed towards the direction his subject had gone.

A friend was driving an old nash rambler with seat belt, but no harness.

On I-80, a Utah Highway Patrolman pulled up beside him, and signaled that he needed to put on his seat belt.

My friend tried, with hand signals, to tell the Patrolman that he was wearing a seat belt. Unfortunately, by pointing to his crotch, he gave the cop the universal sign for "bite me".

Once the patrolman got my friend stopped, the LEO realized what was going on, but still strongly suggested that a harness be installed.

What is ridiculous is your defense of corruption and abuse of power.

1. Its well documented that its against the law for an officier is not allowed to use his lights in a non emergency.

he following article was taken from The Rush on June 23 2005

Chiefs stopping cops' speeding prosecutions

Every Surrey police officer caught breaking the speed limit by a roadside camera in the last five years, without any blue lights flashing, has had their notice of prosecution withdrawn by a senior officer.
Figures obtained by The Rush show that in the past five years, 55 officers were observed speeding by one of the country's speed cameras and sent a notice of intended prosecution. On each occasion, the vehicle's blue lights were not flashing. The sequence of lights on a police vehicle mean that one should be seen at any time.
A further five were observed speeding through what the force describes as other methods, such as by a senior officer.

Ooooh, that is a pet peeve of mine. People do that in my apt complex all the time.

And there are plenty of spots to park, so it's not like a busy city intersection or something. Park, get out, and find the person you are picking up.

I think cops should be obligated to publish or make available all the WARNING tickets they have written compared to violations issued.

My dime says the vast majority of "warnings" are given to humans with cleavage and hiked-up skirts.

I'm a police officer who routinely will come to a red light and then go through it with my lights on and proceed to turn them off when I'm through.

I assume you do this when you are on a call, not just on routine patrol.

This is done because its actually safer for a Police Officer to drive without his lights on. When I put my lights and siren on People lose their mind.

Yep. And it isn't temporary either, people are still driving insanely well after you're gone.

BTW, Welcome aboard - hope you stick around.

People in authority abusing their power in defiance of the law are a public safety hazard.

Who generally assembles such statistics? Do you think they might have a conflict of interest in reporting them?

Police and judges are the employees of the Citizens; any authority they have is given to them by the Citizens.

They should respect their employers.

What part of public servant are you incapable of understanding?

"Oh please, the cop got caught abusing his authority...I say good for the kid."

-- -- --

You and the kid don't know what the officer was doing, but I'll tell you this:

When an officer has to get somewhere fast without delay and without disturbing the population and perhaps help a fellow officer or to minimize any advance notification of the perps still at the scene of a potential crime in progress, THE COPS WILL DO THIS AND ARE ENTITLED TO DO THIS.

Typical. I'll try to describe my experience. There is a 18wheeler stopped on the side of road. I am driving in the right hand lane, and an another 18wheeler is passing me on the left. I can't see that there is a cop car in front of the stopped 18W on the sholder. He opens his door right into my path and I have no where to swerve. Sure enough doesn't he chase me down and give me a good speaking to. Runs all my papers to try to drum up something, and gives me a warning for having a different address on my license and my registration, because I recently moved. Some cops just think the whole world should move to their whims.

I certainly hope your welcome is sincere. Why on earth would we not want someone like this on FR? I have an unpopular job too, and defend it when it is unfairly impugned. I fail to see why we should be anything less than open to new members like this.

...flashing his headlights on bright...

That was an old trick the cops used in a small town in Alabama I use to live. They intentionally would drive with their lights on bright. If you put yours on bright you would be pulled and ticketed. All the teens in the town knew if a car was coming with lights on bright just leave it alone and slow down.
