I attended the Consumer Electronics Trade show in Chicago back in the 70s. There was a company that had an object that looked like an aquarium with a 6 inch 3D girl walking around in it. You could reach in and put your hand right through her. The company spokesman said they were working on a 3D projector that would mount 3 laser projectors in the top corners of a room and where the beams would intersect, there would appear a 3D object. This was back in 1975. I've always wondered what happened to that research.

They were ordered by the feds to stop working on it and concentrate on the 100MPG carburetor.
