They have insisted his comments were divisive and inflammatory.

Insisting that newcomers abide by the rules or get out is not divisive. Going to a new country and demanding that those people already there follow your rules, or you will destroy their property, rape and murder, is divisive.

Inflammatory? Probably. There was an American by the name of Samuel Adams, whose writings could be described as inflammatory. We remember him very fondly.

You can just about always count on the nauseating 'divisive' and 'inflammatory' charges to be made when some dictate of PC multiculturalism has been broken. It just goes to show that diversity, despite all the glorification of it, is most certainly not a strength when it comes to the open and free exchange of ideas.

These Australian leaders should be applauded. I'm shocked that there hasn't been any Lawrence Summers-style retreat and apology yet, and I was also surprised that the Prime Minister backed Costello up.

Still, its sad that we've come to a point in the West where the charge of not being 'committed to multiculturalism' even qualifies as a charge that someone would be comfortable making.
