The Russian man in the street never hated us. Their elites weren't religious fanatics. They were, as we discovered, old fashioned nationalists. Old fashioned imperialists. And increasingly corrupt ones at that. Their motives were comprehensible and they could be bribed.
Militant Islam is different. They can't be bought. Religious fanatics don't care about money. Look at the furor over the cartoons and tell me how much you trust these people.
The UAE had promised and delivered $100 mil to us for Katrina relief a few weeks ago before this port deal was made. Just heard it on my local radio news. ????!
Very much.
Britain doubtless has plenty of al-Qaeda cells composed of home grown British Islamists. The horse is out of the barn there.
Actually the Russians in the Soviet Union (and all of the other Republics) weren't permitted to speak their mind, which actually creates more similarity to the Middle East today.
Also, did you read the posts from Muslims who disdained the cartoon protest saying in effect, why should I get upset over cartoons when every time I hear a police car, I wet my pants?
1.2 billion people aren't a monolith. And they aren't going to disappear. What do you do?
Excellent!!!!
Well how is it any better if it's an American company? We are not allowed to have authorities look for individuals who have physical characteristics similar to the suspects?
As apparently do the Chinese Communists. I heard Rep. Issa from Long Beach CA say that that port is under Chinese Management. I was not aware of that. I'm not surprised. I don't believe our ports are compromised. Working for a medium-sized corporation, I'm never surprised nowadays when mergers and acquisitions take place that gobble someone or something up. My last job was with a software company that acquired about 10 companies in the six years I was with them. We do it; they do it.
Well Tony will maintain audience along with Rush. Sean has lost a large segment of his audience. These celebrities forget who we elected as President, and it was NOT them! Sean has been very childish in his handling of this controversy.
LLS
I hope so too
Those koolaide drinkers would include General Tommy Franks and Colonel Ollie North, two people he claims are his friends.
We have always had a powerful Southwest based corporate lobby in this country that sell high tech equipment, services, and weaponry to the Muslim world. Bechtel, Enron, Halliburton, etc. And it is embedded in the GOP. It has over the years assured us that Iran and Saudi Arabia were loyal allies because these were their prime customers. We sold them F14s, Phantoms, AWACs, F15s, and just about every high tech item in our arsenal. They had/have been our military-industrial complexes bread and butter customers.
But we know that their perspective was shallow and mistaken. They had intimate business relationships with corrupt elites. They hadn't a clue about the man in the street. It came crashing down when the Shah fell and on 9/11.
So now we have a procession of the same corporate interests and their assorted hangers on in the bureaucracy praising the UAE just as they praised Iran and Saudi Arabia and for the same reasons, and like sinkspur yelling "racism, racism" when their motives are questioned.
Yep, General Tommy Franks and Colonel Ollie North are hangers on. How dare anyone assume that they have a knowledge of the middle east, terrorism and national security greater then yours.
Ok in "devils advocate role",Isn't better that a foreign company have the operations lease, since it is a lot easier to investigate foreign lease holders rather than American lease holders? Did that make sense?
Good morning, sl.
Great read bump!
I listen to Tony Snow (bought XM radio in order to be able to get him) and Rush when I turn on the radio in the afternoon.
I prefer the Snow show, however, and if you can get it it's well worth a listen. Plus he has a daily thread on FR and he posts to us under his own name. Also his producer posts on that thread, too.
He has been doing yeoman's work in getting the facts out about this issue, and has had all sorts of interesting interviews. It is an excellent show!
It's good that we have a few mature pundits around who don't immediately jump on every red herring that comes along.
I think I'm gonna cry. Sniff.
