Should Gov. M. Jodi Rell accept deeply discounted heating oil for Connecticut's poor if it comes - via a gubernatorial rival - from the government of Venezuela's socialist president, Hugo Chavez?
It is a delicate question that Rell soon must answer thanks to a deal arranged by one of her Democratic opponents, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr.
DeStefano, whose administration has worked on the deal since December, said Wednesday that Rell shouldn't hesitate, even if Chavez is a harsh critic of the Bush administration.
"She's clearly more concerned about George Bush's politics than about the needs of families in Connecticut," DeStefano said.
But Rell, a Republican who has kept her distance from President Bush, said she is awaiting an opinion from Attorney General Richard Blumenthal as to the legality of Connecticut's involvement.
"If there is no problem, if it's perfectly OK, it may be something that we would like to pursue as a state," Rell said. "Anytime we can get reduced oil we would like to take advantage of it."

Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
I thought Chavez was a communist.
"I thought Chavez was a communist."
He is really more of a dictator/socialist - not unlike Fidel.
Is that a serious question?
Go to dictionary.com and lookup fungible...and then also consider the 'why' behind Chavez's (thinly veiled) offer...
FR as of late has spun down in terms of cognizant discourse...
My motto is, "Let's try and run them out of oil". Go for it governor.
Why not accept it and then define poor for oil purposes as anyone making under $12 million per year?
Since it undermines the power of a price colluding cartel, yes. But I think this whole oil for poor people needs examination. There are probably many other long term solutions that would be better than subsidizing heating oil. In particular, substandard, inefficient housing could be improved or replaced.
The gester would undermine the statement that Chavez is trying to make. This man is dangerous and allowing him to meddle in our politics is unforgivable.
We should offer the Venezuelan resistance discounted sniper rifles and assualt rifles with uniforms and even free intelligence on Chavez's security detail in return.
Yes, you should definitely cozy up to that anti-american marxist rebel so that those who already don't pay for their oil can get some free oil.
yessah massah!!!!!
