LOS ANGELES – Philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad donated $25 million to build a stem cell research center at the University of Southern California, school officials said Thursday.

Groundbreaking for the center, which will be named the Broad Institute for Integrative Biology and Stem Cell Research, will begin in the fall.

The 215,000-square-foot facility is expected to be the largest stem cell research center in the state when it opens in 2008, the university said.

The Broad Institute will bring together various scientific disciplines to study stem cells, which some believe hold promise for treating an array of diseases like Parkinson's and diabetes.

“To solve complex biological problems, scientists must move beyond the confines of their own discipline and explore new organizational models for team science,” said Brian Henderson, dean of USC's Keck School of Medicine.

In 2004, California voters approved a ballot measure that created a state stem cell agency to dole out $300 million a year in grants for 10 years for research. But research has been delayed by legal challenges to the initiative.

The billionaire couple founded the Broad Foundation, which donates to education, science and the arts.

Last November, the Broads doubled their commitment to $200 million to build a center to study human genetics. The center will be a joint venture of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
