This would be the most phenomenal turnabout in the history of desktop computing. There's just one fly in the ointment.

Why not, their goal is to sell computers. Why not use the OS that has the most software written for it.
No.
Never happen. EGO factor.
They need to Make OS X compatible with PC's. Thats what they need to do.
This would be unbelievable -- and very fun to watch!
GotDotNet?
Namely, that Dvorak is a freaking moron?
NO! No, and NO! (I hope)
Well, you know with all those viruses, trojans, worms and DOS attacts now hitting the Mac OS, Apple needs a more secure operating system! he he he
No chance. Their hardware isn't price-competitive in the commodity market that PC hardware has become. Abandoning their OS would alienate Apple's core user base and turn them into nothing more than an MP3 player manufacturer and possibly a super-niche manufacturer of expensive but pretty hardware for the computer user equivalent of people who put 26" chrome wheels on their cars.
Nah, its just fear mongerin:)
In my case, and presumably most other Apple owners, I bought specifically because of OS X - a solid unix I can develop software in, topped by a nice frosting to do all those multimedia things I want to happen transparently. I never gave a thought to buying a mac until OS X came out.
I cannot think of anything that I cannot run on my powerbook that I could run on a windows machine. Anymore, most of everything I do is via a browser anyway. The concept of 'platform' has migrated from hardware, to an OS, and in recent years to a network/browser.
.Net Framework perhaps?
"Nobody", huh. That sounds plausible.
The second was that the iPod lost its FireWire connector because the PC world was the new target audience.
Standard not adopted? ABANDON SHIP!
Also, although the iPod was designed to get people to move to the Mac, this didn't happen.
The iPod was designed to make Apple lots of money. It's not a loss-leader by any means.
And, of course, that Apple had switched to the Intel microprocessor.
Here's my two cents. Apple wants to leverage the larger pool of OSS developers on that hardware. Apple has cleverly layered Mac OS X so that they could interchange components with say... I don't know... some open source kernel similar to BSD... don't know what that'd be... hmmm...
Dvorak's smoking opium again.
He needs page hits every so often, so he comes up with this sort of $%@*. And of course, we all rush on over to see him make a horse's behind of himself (again).
Try this analogy, folks:
Dvorak:computers::Mondale:politics
Everyone clear now?
I'm vey sweet and mostly housebroken.
Well said. Without OS X they become merely a fashion statement. Reminds me of the book 'Hypercompetitive Rivalries' by D'Aveni which talks about why niche players emerge, and how some businesses migrate to commodity providers (for better or worse). There is no value for AAPL in becoming another windows running hardware provider.
Just call it iWindows and the crazies will lap it up.
Silliest Apple rumor I've ever heard, and I've heard quite a few.
Exactly.
Apple can't become just another Dell.
