Ill. Governor Confused by 'Daily Show' Bit

1 hour, 41 minutes ago

Gov. Rod Blagojevich wasn't in on the joke. Blagojevich says he didn't realize "The Daily Show" was a comedy spoof of the news when he sat down for an interview that ended up poking fun at the sometimes-puzzled Democratic governor.

"It was going to be an interview on contraceptives ... that's all I knew about it," Blagojevich laughingly told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in a story for Thursday's editions. "I had no idea I was going to be asked if I was 'the gay governor.'"

The interview focused on his executive order requiring pharmacies to fill prescriptions for emergency birth control.

Interviewer Jason Jones pretended to stumble over Blagojevich's name before calling him "Governor Smith." He urged Blagojevich to explain the contraception issue by playing the role of "a hot 17-year-old" and later asked if he was "the gay governor."

At one point in the interview, a startled Blagojevich looked to someone off camera and said, "Is he teasing me, or is that legit?"

I'll give the guy a pass on this one. Most governers are too busy to watch late night television. W doesn't watch much TV either.

Fair enough. But I would not give a pass to his staff for failing to brief him on the show prior to agreeing to have him interviewed on camera.

Someone on his staff is NOT doing their job.

If you let your boss walk unarmed into a situation like this ...

What is the point about his executive order? All pharmacies in Illinois now must provide the "morning-after" pill, even if the pharmacy owner regards that as tantamount to abortion?

What is great about that article too is what is conspicuously missing...Gov. Rod Blagojevich's political affiliation isn't given (which means of course that he is a Dim), but the representative also mentioned is identified as a Republican. The bias even permeates light stories like this, sadly.

Wouldn't he have maybe been clued in by knowing that the channel on which he was appearing is "Comedy Central?"

It gags me to defend a politician, but it is entirely understandable that all heavily scheduled public speakers rely heavily on their paid staff, to thoroughly vet the scheduled speaking engagements they make on his/her behalf, that they be appropriate, and also to prep the speaker for the environment/audience, on the fly, if neccessary.
Anyone who thinks someone can be put into a public speaking environment, and avoid occasionally looking like a complete idiot, has never actually stood in front of an audience.

An excellent point, and I agree completely, and withdraw my 'pass'.

I don't think he's going to give his staff a pass either...
