Illinois pulls recognition for Elmwood Park over immigration fight

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. State education officials say Illinois has withdrawn its recognition of a suburban Chicago school district over its decision to deny enrollment to students based on immigration status. The decision today means Elmwood Park District 401 will lose all of its state funding.

Board spokeswoman Meta Minton says it's the first time since 1989 that a school's had its recognition status stripped by the board.

In December, the state put Elmwood Park on probation because it had denied enrollment to a girl who had a tourist visa. State rules prohibit discrimination against children seeking public education because of their immigration status.

An attorney for the district didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

...but I bet if another American born and bred kid to an American family from another district tried to attend school in that district that district would go after the American family for tuition.

Black Letter Law. You cannot make a contract to do an illegal thing. Ergo, you can not penalize an entity for refusing to do an illegal thing.

If the school district has rules about residency that they apply to non-resident Americans, they have to have the same rules they apply to non-resident foreigners. Sue. The State might lose on this. They can not have two sets of rules - one for Americans and another for foreigners.

Here where I live in Rhode Island I was excited to hear about the city of Cranston deciding to refuse and possibly prosecute illegal students. For a few seconds I thought this state might be turning around. The story went on to clarify that "illegal students" meant kids from other school districts who travel to the good schools in Cranston. Illegal aliens are still welcome but these kids who are mostly trying to escape the violent schools of nearby Providence are out of luck.

Dems love illegals, Republicans love illegals, but American born citizen is now a second class citizen.

This is why we can never get a handle on ILLEGAL immigration!

Even the LAW makers won't stand up for the laws!

If there is one place that stands solid, unchanging, it is Elmwood Park.

Elmwood Park is legendary. It's pure Italian middle class that has seen perhaps less change since the 40s than any community in the country. Long lines into Johnnie's, Chicago's best Italian beef shop, have never stopped, with Rolls Royce-driven, Dago-tee wearing customers eating at the same old wooden picnic tables.

I'll put my money on Elmwood Park standing firm.

At least the girl had legal papers allowing her to be here. Illegal aliens are welcomed, but American children from outside a school district would be turned away. If the girl had a student visa instead of a tourist visa then federal law would allow them to admit her if she was a resident. A TOURIST visa is not valid for attending any public school or college.
How about turning away children who are not here legally? That should be legal, but the liberal bleeding hearts won't have it. Turning away American children from a neighboring district should be illegal, but that would be CHOICE and the liberals can't allow us to have choice. It would be too much like freedom to suit them.

There's more info about this in a Sun-Times article.

Bottom line is the State Education Board Chairman, Jesse Ruiz appointed by ijit gov Blago, is the son of ILLEGALS and an ANCHOR BABY himself.

So he threw a temper tantrum because his own kind, ILLEGALS, were asked about their immigration status per a new Federal Law, (according to Elmwood Park).

Sheesh, and some in an uproar about the UAE Port deal. This is worse, an ANCHOR BABY running the states schools. Talk about Fox-Hen house.
