Needed in what way? To ensure wage controls against nations that make things for half the costs? I have no dog in this fight, and I really don't know how it is going to play out in 50 years.

I have no dog in the fight either. Other than being an American. I'm non union, never have been union.
If the balance of power shifts to employers, employers will grow more and more abusive. Without unions funding lobbys, laws will change. Eventually working conditions will come to a point where some intervention would be needed.
A union?
