How cold has it been on Capitol Hill? Political journalist Juan Williams says its been so frigid that "the politicians are still walking around with their hands in their own pockets.
On a more serious note, Williams senior correspondent for National Public Radio and a Fox News contributor discussed the "rapid rate of change in the U.S. in the past few years when he addressed the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches in Florida.
Williams cited the Clinton impeachment hearings, two controversial presidential elections, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hurricane Katrina and the addition of two new Supreme Court justices in one year, the Palm Beach Daily News reports.
"The news comes at you so quickly, Williams said. "Its incredible in this day and age. Given that tremendous rate of news, sometimes I think its easy for us to lose touch with the broader picture the pattern of change.
Williams also spoke about the changes he has seen in Prince George County, Md., a Washington suburb. Thirty years ago the county was 80 percent white and most blacks were farmhands with little education.
Today, the county is 60 percent black and the wealthiest black community in America, Williams said.
"So much focus in the country is [on] the impoverished minority community. But while 25 percent of the black community lives in poverty, 75 percent is outside of that. It doesnt always get in the news.
And regarding the publication of satirical cartoons depicting Muhammad, Williams said: "I will always side with the notion of freedom of speech and the right to publish.
Wow......
And in other news, I just saw Porky Pig flying by my window.
OMG YOU BEAT ME BY 1 MINUTE! CHECK OUT MY POST ABOVE YOURS! LOL
Well.....lookee here....seems Juan FINALLY decided the TRUTH is worth REPORTING.....way to go, Juan!
Watch for Juan to get suspended from NPR like the last time he agreed with the Bush adminstration.
What was "controversial" about the last presidential election? In 2000 abu gore created the controversy and had to be snuffed, true, but in 2004?
whoa now...I'm all for slinging sarcasm at the media, but not when they get it right and report something worth reporting!
Now, can we just have a "History Month" ----with no colors attached???
Has Juan Williams suffered a major brain injury lately?
The last few times I have heard him speak I thought I was hearing things. Maybe he has forsaken the Dark Side!
Sounds like Juan has been Hume-in-ized.
There was a point in time when it made sense to have black history month but that time passed years ago.
Bill O'Reilly said he heard from inside sources that the GM of an NPR affiliate in Boston got Williams fired from NPR by complaining that Juan wasn't liberal enough.
This Juan Willams??
Bitch slapped by Brit Hume Juan Willams?
Keep it up Brit. Liberals need a bitch slap once in a while to wake them up to reality.
I'm sure this blasphemy will not go unpunished. (sarc)
Maybe its due to Fox News.
Put a liberal in a discussion where they have to back up their statements, and they begin to realize that they might be wrong. Or at least, that there is another side to the story.
Maybe he can influence NPR as well. If they don't fire him first.
See post #11
THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL OF US!!!! sheesh.
What, no Irish History Month!
PG County also has a homicide rate that rivals if not exceeds Baltimore's(which is dreadful), and half of all the cars stolen in Maryland annually are stolen in Prince George's County. True enough, there have been big changes(good ones) there for black folk over the years, but the crime rate is astonishing. I'll bet old Juan didn't mention that one.
