Feinstein: Ports 'ought to be governmentally operated' Associated Press
SAN DIEGO - U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Tuesday it was fortunate that California's major ports are run differently than the six big ports on the East and Gulf coasts embroiled in controversy over whether their shipping operations should be taken over by a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates.
"My reaction is that it is a mistake to let ports be privately owned, period," the California Democrat said during a news conference in San Diego.
Feinstein was asked her view on the sale of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to Dubai Ports World. Approved by the Bush administration and expected to be completed soon, it would put Dubai Ports in charge of shipping operations in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia
Feinstein said she was familiar with port operations because of her nine years as mayor of San Francisco.
"We operated a port," she said. "On the West Coast, most of the ports that I know of are all governmentally operated, and I actually believe that's the way it should be. I don't know how it got started on the East Coast that private entities operate ports."

When this broohaha started, I KNEW it was leading up to this!!!
Reference any of my posts on this subject. I called it early!
Now I know why the rats are against the deal.. They want the Government to run the ports..
Then you'd have to call it MSA for "Millions Standing Around" instead of just thousands.
If it boiled down to a choice of which commies profit from a port, I'd rather our commies than their commies.
DiFi's hubby, Blum assisted with this....
Cosco enlisted President Clinton and others to help it lease an old naval port in Long Beach, Calif. GOP lawmakers blocked the deal, which would have in effect given the Chinese military a U.S. beachhead.
So you want government operation without the idiocy brought by government operation? HAHAHA.
"The name Schumer comes to mind. Can't believe Savage fell for that."
If brains were rifle oil, Savage wouldn't have enough to grease the dynamo in a firefly's butt...
BUMP
Yeah, the logic kind of zipped right past me...must've missed something.
I agree with her. Things related to national security are best left to the FedGuv.
The democrats jumped all over the Bush administration regarding Katrina...NOW they want the government to take control of the ports....what planet are the dems living on?
Democrats see opportunity to garner more UNION votes.
Have you taken a flight since 2002?
Now imagine the critical choke points of the economy being run with the same level of efficiency as the DMV and the TSA...
I understand and agree with your concern. The model must be much different.
Nonetheless, this is still a National Security issue.
"I understand and agree with your concern. The model must be much different."
If it were different, it wouldn't be the government.
I had a feeling this was something more than national security.. It was about one thing.. Getting them union votes..
Oh, great! These are the same people
who operate the Internal Revenue Service
and the U.S. Department of State.
You can't get a straight answer from IRS
and the state department is trying to give
our country to the Chinese.
They'd be GREAT people to operate our ports.
Too sweeping. The DMV in Rochester, NY, was a model of efficiency, for example. It can be done, therefore this argument must be -- while borne in mind -- put aside.
NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
