Judging a country by its tourism facilities is rather shallow, no?

So, is this the payback for their help then? The Islamofacists think long term, for that they must be given credit.

Because it absolutely WAS the strategy after the second world war. And it has worked perfectly.

Key word: AFTER. As in, "After we dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese, we helped them build a stable economy." Not before.

Yes. It would be. Did you read the rest of my post? Let me repeat it..."The UAE is rapidly becoming one of the world's leading trading powers. It is an anchor of stability in an incredibly unstable region." It is not unlike Hong Kong or Singapore in this regard.

"Secular government. The government in UAE is SECULAR, not Islamic."

The government is a monarchy, I would not describe any monarchy as "secular".

Are you suggesting we nuke the UAE?

How open is it? Any cathedrals? Buddhist monasteries? Temples? Baptist or LDS missionaries? Can a woman drive a car? Are burkas mandatory? How much money did they funnel to the Taliban, whom they still recognize as the legitimate government of Afghanistan? When was the last time they denounced terrorism and acted accordingly? Questioning minds want to know.

Hong Kong and Singapore have real governments that abide by the rule of law -- British common law, that is. You could look it up.

Wake me up when Dubai can say the same. Sharia law doesn't count.

Seven years ago? Go back now.

An entire month was enough time out of my life, no thanks. Longest month of my life, I made a chart to track what percentage of my time was complete. At last the blessed day came in the middle of the night and I boarded the KLM 767 that would head back to Amsterdam. The plane took off and I was happy, then it turned 90 degrees and followed a highway at low altitude. I thought we were going to turn back but the plane just followed the highway. Finally there was an announcement that we would be landing in Abu Dhabi. I thought "holy crap, I got on the wrong plane." But no, it had said KLM on the side and the flight attendants were Dutch. As it turned out the route is Amsterdan-Dubai-Abu Dhabe-Amsterdam. A triangle route with one hell of a hypotenuse and adjacent side and a minimal opposite side!

Our country "was" used by terrorists. Many countries "were" used by terrorists.

Well yeah, but our country isn't run by sheiks who produce terrorists and fund terror, while on the other hand they pretend to be our allies. Sorry but I don't buy that CR**

The "government" of Dubai -- and apparently the owner -- is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Again, you could look it up.

"Love Rush. Most Important Conservative in America! In the World! But sometimes these days, he's to worried about getting invited to golf tournaments and hob-nobbing with bigwigs"

Rush has become much more of a cheerleader lately for the party. A lot more "rah-rah" and a lot less objective analysis. I can assure you that if you kept the facts the same about this story and changed the name "Bush" to "Clinton" he'd have a very different take.

I just heard O'Reilly on FOX pushing heavily for the UAE ports deal. He said it would be "a disaster" for the US if we alienate "our allies" over this. He also said it smacked of racism and practically guaranteed we will lose the War on Terror if we nix the deal. WTF???

'step up and explain why a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard.'

Ahem.

It's the murderous mohammedanism.

Thank you.

That's what bothers me more than anything else. It's akin to doing the Bristol Stomp in a minefield.

I guess I'd better duck now, too.

When I was there the enlisted personnel in the armed forces were all Yemeni mercenaries. I would not place much faith in that arrangement.

I'm surprised that no American companies bid for these ports. Did they not consider the political fallout from this? Couldn't some of them have gotten together, a la the Six Companies and Hoover Dam?
