The necrotizing bacteria do actually "eat" away the flesh. The venom of the brown recluse causes constriction of the local (to the bite) blood vessels, causing the flesh to die.

I googled it, and found some horrific pics, which caused me to immediately make an dbl adult beverage. Gawd, that's an awful wound.
