Student paper's cartoon creates dissent

OLIVER MOORE

A University of Toronto student newspaper was accused yesterday of "purposely ridiculing" religious students with a cartoon that appears to show Jesus Christ kissing the Prophet Mohammed.

The image ran this week in The Strand, the Victoria College newspaper, in response to violent protests over other cartoons depicting the founder of Islam.

Editor Aine O'Hare wrote that the paper wrestled with the decision but wanted to inspire discussion and critical thinking.

The decision raised the ire of the undergraduate students' union, which wants the paper removed from stands.

The people at the student newspaper must have a death wish or a death wish for Canadians who live abroad (or people at Canadian embassies).

This may not be a Front Page story, but if Moslems in the Middle East get wind of this, this could be trouble for Canadians abroad...

Jesus kissing Mo ~ yup ~ I can see that ~ it's consistent with the Mahdi arriving and doing His thing just before the return of Jesus and the Final Judgment, where, no doubt Mo will get a big kiss and a thankyou.

I think the people who want this one suppressed have absolutely no knowledge or appreciation of Moslem theology and traditions.

I don't think the cartoon riots have even injured a westerner. The rioters are killing themselves, and that's not entirely a bad thing.

I hope they have good security at the school against a possible terrorist attack...

Of course, security is much tighter in a liberal country like Canada. [/sarcasm off]

The students at the newspaper may learn the hard way that Islam advocates killing the Infidel...

I could make a daily headline of "College Sophomore Does Something Stupid." These students have lived in a make believe world where the evil intolerant conservatives can be silenced by an edict from the government or threat of a bad grade on a test. They're getting into something they don't understand or comprehend. To them, this is all theoretical. Their heroes of the left pretended to be brave by standing up to a benevolent government that had no intention of harming them, and in fact, bent over backwards to keep from doing so. The Muslims want to kill them. To these pampered little fools, Theo Van Gogh is a fairy tale from a land far away. They may find soon, to their disdain, that there is real evil in the world.

Doesn't Canada now have some sort of UN harassment law that applies for this sort of thing? Who gets to sue first?

It is actually against the law in Canada to have something that might be construed as Hate Speech against Gays.

But apparently, it is okay to have what may be construed as hate speech against Christians and Moslems...

Sounds like the Canadians have a double standard.

Okay to be hateful to Christians and Moslems, but you are put in jail for hateful words against Gays.

If you oppose Gay Marriage in Canada, and you write your feelings about it in Canada, you may be thrown in jail or fined for such speech. The same protection is not enjoyed when talking about religions, though...

They have laws about Hate Speech about Gays, but not about religion.

You can be as hateful as you about religion in Canada, but you are not allowed to print anything that may be construed as hateful towards Gays.

There was a case a few years ago that pro-abortion activists took used condoms to a Catholic Church and littered the church with used condoms and grafitti, but that was not against the law.

But there has been legal pressure applied to a person who has printed information (including quoting the Bible) about Gay Marriage.

I am curious why leftists never seem to want anyone to do any "critical thinking" about leftist causes such a "Glo-bull Warming", Socialism, Nanny Statism, etc...

They have burned alive some Christians, beaten a few to death. They kill indescriminatly, and when you are in reach they will kill you too. I kinda suspect people should be fighting this a bit more, but the sheep in the middle of the herd rarely care what is happening to the ones on the edge when the wolves come.

The current poll numbers by The Strand are:

68% - No - the Cartoon should not have been printed.
28% - Yes - the Cartoon should be printed.
4% - I don't understand the cartoon.

50% said they were offended by the Cartoon. Another 18% were against the cartoon being printed, but were not offended.

The YES were broken down into 12% - Yes freedom of Press and another Yes category (which I forget what it should for).

But basically, only 1/4 of the people responded that the cartoon should have been printed (today 2/21/2006 about noon Toronto time).
