U.S. Fifth helps Egypt SAR [Search and Rescue] mission

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. Navy has played a role in the search and rescue of passengers of an Egyptian ferry that sank in the Red Sea.

Officials said that on Feb. 4 the U.S. Navy helped search for survivors of the Egyptian ferry that sank in the Red Sea. The ferry, carrying an estimated 1,400 passengers, sank the day before off the coast of Egypt.

The navy deployed a P-3 Orion maritime patrol plane to search for survivors. Officials said the U.S. Navy crew flew for almost 15 hours.

060204-N-0000N-001 RED SEA (Feb 4, 2006) - Infrared image taken from U.S. Navy P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, assisting in search and rescue operations for survivors of the Egyptian ferry Al Salam Boccaccio 98 in the Red Sea, shows a rescue vessel alongside a life raft. The aircraft, assigned to the Golden Swordsmen of Patrol Squadron (VP-47), flew for almost 15 hours during the mission to assist local authorities in the search efforts. VP-47 is homeported at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, and is currently supporting missions in the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of operations. U.S. Navy photo (RELEASED)
