US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton called upon Iran on Sunday to abandon its nuclear weapons development program, thus alleviating the concerns of the international community.
In an interview to The Times, he cited Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as a precedent, indicating that relations between Libya and the West improved dramatically when the former halted its nuclear program.
As current chairman of the UN Security Council, Bolton warned that international pressure on Iran would intensify so long as it continues pursuing its nuclear ambitions.
Way to go President Bush! ;*)
Israel may have to give Iran nukes...about 6 I'd guess.
We must stop that kinda macho swaggering.
Nuking is just not thinkable. We have other means.
Libya is a case in point. It's not perfect.
Lee? What else is new? Those facts have been established for a very long time. It is a dreadful situation.
What is your point?
And just because they have announced their intentions, what do you propose that we do?
Exhaust every option to prevent Iran from going through with developing nukes. Diplomatic, sanctions etc.
If those fail, my point is that Israel may act unilaterally.
They need to send a video of Saddam being dragged out of the spider hole to the Mullahs. That's what convinced Kaddaffi.
Nah, then the mullahs will show a video of Saddam making a fool out of everyone in court.
Yeah, and look at him now, making a mockery of the judicial system in place over there and of the US. No fear or respect. I can't imagine that they care.
Besides, most of them are either too stupid or too filled with rage to think rationally.
No question about it. It's serious and you are correct about Israel...but have you noticed that ,with our support, they have conceded many times to the pressures and atrocities committed against them?
Much of this has to do with powerful diplomatic and economic pressure being applied by the combined free world and it's not all that public or available to the public for many obvious reasons of security and privacy.
Palestine right this moment is facing the loss of monumental funding from Israel if the current threat levels are not ceased soon. Plus they face similar devastating financial support withholding from us as well.
While it all is of considerable interest to average citizens, don't for a moment believe that they ( you or me) have any influence in any part of all of this.
Thus pissing and moaning about "who shot John" is a collossal waste of time and personal effort. and putting in your "2-cents" about Bombing one or the other is "peeing up the rope".
Are you getting any of this?
You'd be far better off getting on your knees and praying to God for his Grace to be shed on all the various participants and for world peace for all.
I always said they should have followed the Ceausescu model for Saddam's trial.
Ceausescu, the dictator of Romania, was captured, tried, convicted and executed within 24 hrs from his capture.
I agree, except I would have thrown Saddam to a crowd of Shi'ites and Kurds, and then walked away.
Todays bombs are clean and effective. Not so with those dropped on Japan-yet those cities were rebuilt.
Lots of misinformation on these weapons..granted a weapon of last resort but neverless, would you want to take the chance of these fruitcakes having just one? They'll use it and use it in a second. My guess is they'll use them on the closest target and that would be Israel. At that time it would be all out war with those bombs flying all over the place. Are we as a nation willing to chance that?
Disabuse yourselfof the notion of "clean nuclear devices". The likely devastation would be utterly indescribable. Radiation levels with several million year half-lives...and far reaching undesirable ,catastrophic effects to neighboring nations and their environment and populations.
This ain't no computer game Pal. This is dreadfully horrible stuff. It is unthinkable. That's why the civilized world is dead against madmen and thugocracies having weapons such as this.
Whether you fancy yourself as some sort of enlightened Liberal or a know-nothing neocon, the devastation won't discriminate along ideological lines and everyone on earth will be directly involved. We are not spectators to all this...we are participants.
Will join you in prayer.
Yeah, especially if we allow Iran to build and deploy nuclear weapons.
We stop them BEFORE they can deploy them, even if we have to use our own, at least the effects on the North American continent will be minimalized.
If we wait until they are able to 'set one off over Kansas' or ship one into New York or Los Angeles etc., then indeed we are all really screwed.
And since Ahmadinejad has repeatedly promised that he intends to destroy Israel and America, to treat this as anything less than a deadly threat is as stupid as ignoring Al Quaeda in 1988-2000.
Bolton is one of Dubya's great successes. A diplomat with a spine. He knows Iran doesn't WANT good relations with the west.
