Even if she passes on before the kid reaches adulthood, at least there are all the children and grandchildren who could step in and help as necessary.

And there's a good chance she won't. Life expectancy is increasing, new medical advances are made every year - there's a good possibility she can see this kid graduate from college, maybe even live to see this kid's child.

Situations like this are going to become more common. Women who've postponed child-birth into their 40s and 50s to pursue a career can and probably will pursue the options medical science keeps opening up to them - and good for them.
