Transcript: Former Sen. Simpson Discusses His Friend, Dick Cheney
The following is a partial transcript of the FOX News Sunday edition that aired on Feb. 19, 2006:
"FOX NEWS SUNDAY" HOST CHRIS WALLACE: To get an idea of how Mr. Cheney has been getting through what he described as a very long week, we turn now to one of his closest friends in politics, former Senator Alan Simpson, who joins us from Cody, Wyoming.
And, Senator, welcome to "FOX News Sunday".
.... excerpted....
Simpson: Dick Cheney has become the hate symbol from the beginning. He was the hate symbol when he was with Halliburton. He was the hate symbol when he came in and the votes with South Africa and this and that. And then he was the hate symbol of hiding an energy conference. He was the hate symbol of terrorists, hate symbol of torture.
Let me tell you, those who don't like him have put a big red tail on his bum, and cloven hooves, and horns on his head. And let me tell you, if anybody thinks -- if this had happened to anybody else in America, it would have been like a sparrow belch in a typhoon.
WALLACE: Could you be a little more colorful, Senator?
....excerpted.....
Simpson: How are we to trust, after a whole week of absolute dribble, and babble, and people, you know, interviewing themselves -- well, what do you think about Dick, oh, you know -- and Jay Leno and Letterman -- I asked them how would you feel if this happened to you.

Preach it, Senator!!
The replay of Fox News Sunday is coming on NOW.
Thanks for the post. I am going to relish watching this!
Thanks for the info, onyx. This is must-see TV. He really let 'em have it.
LOL! This guy reminds me of the old TXANG officer who said (regarding the fake Bush memos) he wanted to build a barn so he could take the mediots out behind it and kick their @sses!
Not a single media hack can count on any respect from any citizen, and certainly not from his colleagues.
Backstabbing ignorant jackals defines the media.
Except for Brit Hume, of course, and precious few others on FNC.
I just love Senator Simpson! He doesn't suffer fools very well, and won't put up with their crap!
I watched Alan Simpson this morning, and the only thing he said which was a little disturbing was his comment at the close of his remarks where he talked about Jimmy Carter being a "good guy", and I know that bipartisanship is something everyone wants to see, but someone from out west, familiar with the ways of country life, ought to know by now, that (quoting the actor Robert Prosky in 'Christine') "you can't polish a turd!"
This has become the motto of the "Old Media".
He's on now, but I didn't like his first remark praising Evan Bayh.
"Cheney must know that there are millions of us out here who respect and admire him. Nothing can ever change that fact."
"Not a single media hack can count on any respect from any citizen, and certainly not from his colleagues."
True words, OldFriend, very true.
I didn't get that part, but Jimmy Carter is anything but a good guy. He's a mean-spirited, hateful, dumb old goat, is what he is.
And I agree about Evan Bayh, onyx. He looks a lot better than he is, IMO.
Still you'll notice that Sen. Simpson said nice things about Peggy Noonan, then proceeded to absolutely shred her, LOL! Practically called her column s**t, if you know what I mean.
Thanks. And I am very sincere in my thoughts about Jimmy Carter. I despise that mean, hateful old goat, I really do.
Excellent interview, fun and no-holds-barred. Good to see some of the pompous fools get skewered.
I had forgotten what a pleasure it is to listen to Sen. Simpson speak, and I got a real kick out of his appearance today. Too bad that his style of plain talk is almost dead. Anymore people need multiple identities, sockpuppets, kamikazi and drive-by suicide postings, proxies, just about anything to shield them from speaking for themselves, and standing behind what they say. The good Senator is from a distant and receding era.
Controversy, Crap and Confusion, indeed.
DH ping.
Yes, but he's from the old school .. like George HW Bush. They had a tendancy to see the good in people (though difficult to find at times) was the goal.
I don't allow that opinion to color what I believe. And .. 3 of his statements were real winners:
".. like a sparrow belch in a typhoon"
"If something really, really happens, they'll [the media] have a catatonic stroke and pitch forward on their faces."
And the perfect bumper sticker: "controversy, crap and confusion".
pingeroo...................
