Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...but I think it should be looked into. Don't get me wrong..I think this idea of selling these ports to Arabs is absolutely wrong and an unbelievably bad political move for Bush...or anyone. It's just stupid.
Any thoughts?
Coburn, Santorum, Graham - all republicans who are going to look carefully at this. when you get those 3 questioning this, confirmation is not in the bag.
And plus DPWorld is not taking over the ports. They will be operating the loading and unloading of container ships at one of many differently owned terminals at these ports.
And how is this for irony they will be operating the New York facility with a Danish firm.

So far, you have only told us that Sanborn is an expert. OK, I'll buy that. His latest employment was with DP World. We knew that.
That, Dane, is the issue. That you do not see a conflict of interest issue here...never mind the Sharia connection...is alarming to me. Of course, you're no more an expert on these things than any of the rest of us, or you would have laid out your expertise.
I don't like DP Worlds acquisition. I don't like the appointment of Sanborn, either. I especially don't like the linkage between the two.
It's not knee-jerk, and your name-calling is just tiresome and not contributing to the discussion. Tell us why Sanborn is the best choice and tell us why his position at DP World doesn't matter. If you can't tell us that, then what on earth can you tell us?
Well I hope that Coburn, Santorum, and Graham, don't go down the ted kennedy road and give Mr. Sanborn a fair hearing. Seems like you, oceanview wish to go down the ted kennedy road.

Ted has over thirty years of diverse experience in the transportation industry. He has served as the President of Norton Lilly & Co., a premier shipping agency in the United States. Mr. Bilkey was instrumental in the development of China Ocean Shipping Company's services to the United States after the opening of China in the 1980s. He also served as Vice President of Maher Terminals in the Port of New York, one of the major US Terminal Operators.

The authorities asked to speak and answer questions were Tony Mabbatt, Ted Bilkey and Ted Curran. ...
Bilkey is a retired shipping executive who has lived in Iran, Bahrain and other Muslim countries.
Bilkey, who said he was in Dubai during the Persian Gulf War of 1991, said that at that time "Americans were heroes. We were thought of as saviors, but we've totally lost it. What happened?"
He didn't answer this question, but he did have an answer to what he would tell President Bush.
"I think the first recommendation I would make is to take away a serious irritant by telling the Israelis to remove all the West Bank settlements," Bilkey said.
"I feel our government and media are tiptoeing around the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians," he said.
"Our government is not addressing the problem in an vigorous way. If we don't change our unqualified support of Israel, there is no way we can win the war on terrorism," Bilkey said.

there are legitimate questions to ask. its not like I'm advocating bringing up what college clubs this guy belonged to. I want to know what role he played in getting approval for the UAE acquisition, for starters. that's a legitimate question for his confirmation.

I do not approve of Bush's position on some things. Immigration is one of them. Spending is another. I don't like this appointment, either.
My disagreement with President Bush on some things does not make me a liberal. It makes me a person who does not agree with Bush on some things.

The DPWorld acquisition of p&O was an old fashioned and legitimate take over and the Bush administartion had nothing to do with it. If anything your animus should be directed at the P&O shareholders.
OH BTW, if you are so concerned about people taking jobs or money from the UAE when are you going to trash Tiger Woods, for playing in a Dubai tournament earlier this month.

Published: Feb 17, 2006TAMPA - The Port of Tampa should move forward to secure P&O Ports North America Inc. as its terminal operator despite an emerging political issue over the sale of P&O's parent company to one in the United Arab Emirates, port director Richard Wainio said Thursday.
A pocket of congressional criticism based on fears of potential security risks arose this week over the control of P&O, which operates facilities in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami and 16 other major U.S. ports. ...
Dubai has been diversifying its economy from oil revenue with real estate and other deals in recent months. DP World would become one of the world's three largest port companies if the sale is completed.
The Port of Tampa late last year selected P&O Ports to replace SSA Gulf Inc. as its terminal operator. Officials had become dissatisfied with what they believed was a lack of commitment by SSA to invest in the port's fledgling container cargo operations.
Contracts to curtail operations with SSA Gulf and to formally begin operations with P&O Ports are scheduled to be considered at the Tampa Port Authority's monthly meeting Tuesday.
"There is no issue of security at U.S. ports changing because of a change in ownership of P&O Ports," Wainio said. "It is a business venture. The managers would be American and the employees would be local.
"Plus the terminal operator does not touch the cargo. They operate the cranes lifting the cargo at the port."
P&O Ports would pay the Port of Tampa a guaranteed annual minimum of $1.8 million, in addition to paying $1 million for maintenance of cranes. Seattle-based SSA guaranteed $1.6 million annually to the Port of Tampa, but did not pay maintenance. ...
Wainio said P&O also would participate in helping market the port's cargo container business and would be an asset through its connections with ocean carriers that serve other ports.

What on earth are you talking about? Tiger Woods is not the USA. His playing in a tournament in Dubai is of no interest whatever. Don't be silly.
As for DP World, it is wholly owned by the government of Dubai. You knew that, right? I'm sorry, but this deal is just plain wrong, and Sanborn's appointment is just plain wrong, given the deal.
That you bring Tiger Woods playing in a tournament in Dubai into this discussion is absolutely ridiculous. I don't follow golf. I don't care where Tiger Woods plays. Tiger woods is not a threat to our national security. Container cargo is a potential threat to our national security. Our seaports are a potential place where anything can be brought into our nation.
Don't give me silly arguments. If you have a positive argument, make it. Otherwise you have nothing whatever to say.

Quality has been given the job. The company is great.
The article says he is a superbly qualified and capable man but the bliand bigoted bias of some will not look at the reality of the situation. The company is a world leader.
The misunderstanding and misinformation is testimony to the power of the press to destroy at will. Even those who mistrust the press and should know better have been snookered.
