The Senate is slated to write an immigration bill next month, so we polled North Texas House members to see whether they could live with some likely Senate proposals. We were particularly curious about whether they could embrace a guest worker program to curb illegal immigration. The Senate is considering legalizing more workers through three-year visas.

There's also the coming onslaught of 78 million retiring baby boomers. Without more workers to support retirement programs like Social Security, boomers must live with fewer benefits or younger workers must pay higher payroll taxes to support programs for boomers. Neither choice is good.

well all of us 1950+ baby boomers are being told we're getting less for staying here...
Social Security was meant for the citizens here and never anticipated the influx of illegal alien population like we have today.
How come our elected officials, are so ready to give us the screwjob, while letting our foreign counterparts (illegal aliens) and other foreign nationals of whatever status get full benes...
You and I probably won't agree. SS was to keep old people out of poverty. Therefore, I am for means testing, not putting everyone on the dole on the backs of the young. I am also for anything that encourages foreigners going back to their own countries when they want and helping them want to.
Something came up a while back suggesting that really wealthy people, like Mr. Perot, give up social security, because they don't need it. Could be a possibility. I am open for ideas on how to solve the dilemma.
I have an ex, set of inlaws from Iran. They never worked a day in their life here. They took their work record from Iran to their consulate and through that, with the visit here, and thanks to my sister marrying them, they now collect FULL SS benefits.
Now, that is NOT what SS was meant for.
