I think I can,in part, answer your question about where the moderate muslims are. I refer you and all FReepers to a fantastic book, "Our Culture, What's Left of It" by Theodore Dalrymple. Dr. Dalrymple has had several articles in National Review magazine - including the current issue in which he writes about the global "cartoon" riots. Anyway, Dalrymple is a psychiatrist and widely traveled author who has resided in many Islamic countries and has experienced first-hand the nature of Islamic fanaticism. The book includes a section "When Islam Breaks Down", named by David Brooks of the N.Y.Times as the best journal article of 2004. Dalrymple explains why there is inherent within Islam an instability that inevitably leads to the predominance of those elements characterized by fanaticism, intolerance, and violence over the more passive elements. He draws not only upon his clinical experience but his direct observations and on-the-ground experience. It goes a long way to understanding why the media PC hype about "moderates" within Islam is, unfortunately, not based on a realistic or factual understanding of that religion. It's a fantastic collection of essays that's so readable and fascinating it's hard to put down. Like me, I'm sure you'll give four gold stars.
moderate muslim = oxymoron
There is no such thing as moderate Muslims. Only ones who keep quite - for a time.
