NEW ORLEANS (AP) Jurors have cleared Merck & Co. of responsiblity for the death of a Florida man in the first federal case involving its once popular painkiller Vioxx .
Excellent news!
Wow - really surprised at that, especially in Louisiana, the home of "Jackpot Justice". Good news.
Under one month is an awfully brief period. If Vioxx was THAT bad it wouldn't have taken years to notice it.
This is big, really big...
"Excellent news!"
It sure is! There is hope for those folks who really need the stuff.
It's better to wait until a new drug has been on the market for a couple of years before taking it yourself. The drug companies don't know the longterm side effects until the drug has been used for a few years by a large number of people. How many times have we heard about the dangers of a new drug after it has been on the market for a year or less?If it's not needed as a life saving drug it's better to stick with the older, better known medication.
I'm down to Celebrex...which takes away money, but very little pain.
But will any doctors have the guts to prescribe this (for me) miracle drug?
It sure is! There is hope for those folks who really need the stuff.

Can you take Mobic?
Vioxx worked great for me. The fact is, EVERY drug has potential side effects. Most drugs have SOME side effects for every user. The difficulty comes when there is an incident that causes a storm of criticism against a particular drug that focuses attention on it. Then, that drug, no matter what it is, becomes a target for lawsuits by greedy lawyers and greedy plaintiffs.
Further, given a drug with as many users as Vioxx, in the millions, there will inevitably be those people who have heart attacks and strokes at young ages -- just like the rest of the general population. You can't blame that on a drug -- though many try.
Vioxx, like ephedra, was a wonderful boon to millions. Greedy lawyers have cost us these drugs, and many more we haven't heard about. Today, at minimum, hundreds of thousdands of people are suffering as a result of the removal of these effective drugs from the market.
Good point.
Merck has a new one in the pipeline. I belive they have changed the name from the one I knew, but perhaps the new one won't have the stigma.
Funny, Vioxx didn't work for me, but Celebrex did. But that's why there is choc. and vanilla ice cream. I finally gave in to back surgery and it was very successful, praise the Lord.
That being said, after years of pain, I would have drank gasoline if that was the only way of getting relief. People should have the right to take the risks if they are properly informed.
Amen,wolf. '
well said.
VIOXX is head and shoulders above the others, though Bextra seemed to be doing a fairly good job when I was finally switched to it. (banned 5 days later!)
Mobic and Celebrex don't seem to do much, but I'm almost afraid NOT to take them.
I think many people can not understand what it is like for chronic pain sufferers.
Taking these drugs off the market is life altering to those of us with chronic pain.
I peeked at your profile, so I now don't have to ask your sex.
Its been my (VERY anecdotal....just me asking) observation, but I have found that to be the case of every woman when this topic comes up.
And all men have preferred something other than Celebrex, while women sing its praises and say VIOXX did little.
I asked the doctor and he answered like you...IE. what works for some doesn't work as well as for others.
He didn't see a pattern...but I sure have. :0)
Vioxx really helped me stay sane. THe only thing that comes close to it is Mobic plus massive amounts of sulfasalazine.
I'll have to google that.
I'm sure your experience is valid. It would be interesting if the package circular or any published data shows a breakdown by sex.
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a statistically significant difference in results between men and women, with any approved drug.
It would be interesting to see graphs with results by age as well.
Overweight middle aged man. Doctor son in law prescribes Vioxx WITHOUT any examination. Just gives the man 30 day supply.
The man had more than one risk factor for a heart attack and the family ought to have sued the son in law.....but then why not extort dollars from Merck.
