Either the phone you gave your wife or the one you borrowed from somebody for her to call you on will put you at the scene of the crime via GPS and/or which cell tower you were connected to.
A lawyer friend once told me that if you believe that the "compensation" is the correct amount for the injury, ask yourself the question, "what would I agree to in advance to suffer that injury?". Go ahead and include an amount for the difference between knowing it's going to happen and being surprised.
The actual "fair compensation" via this little thought experiment is typically much less than this kind of award.
