Capital Oslo remains the first choice for non-western immigrants and refugees looking to settle in Norway. Friends and a familiar community plus a belief in better job opportunities keep immigrants heading to Oslo, newspaper Bergens Tidende reports.
In Oslo 18 percent of the population has a non-western background, compared to just 6 percent in Bergen. Researcher Tanja Seland Forgaard can see several explanations for the stream towards Oslo and eastern Norway.
"First, it is important that there are many immigrants in the Oslo area from before. Many have friends and acquaintances there and want to live nearer them. In addition, it is important what kind of network refugees get in the municipality where they are settled. If they don't know many people it is easier for them to decide to move," Forgaard told Bergens Tidende.
Recent research also indicates that job opportunities also attract refugees to the Oslo area.
"They believe it is easier for foreigners to find work in Oslo, partly because there are more casual jobs there and more contacts who can find them work," Forgaard said.
There seems to be a race all over the first world to be the first to surrender demographically to the third. Japan being one of the few that continues to resist.
Au contraire! When I was stationed in Japan roughly 15 years ago, living near Tokyo, I was amazed at the number of Arabs who lived in and around the big city. You'd be surprised. And they all spoke English and harassed us white chicks. My guess is that they were likely from Malaysia. I don't think the level of immigration is as large to Japan as to European nations but it's on the upswing.

Heavens, you'd think the Norwegians would learn from the Belgians, Danish, or even the example of Los Angeles.
The immigrants at any level higher than 5-10% will change the city culturally, forever, and will pollute it, too.
As an Angeleno who was raised in that once-beautiful city, I can attest to this effect personally. Mexicans, legal and illegal, have turned LA into a cesspool. It looks and feels, plus has the culture of, Mexico City.
And, for those Freepers whose hackles are already rising, I am an American with a Hispanic surname so don't give me any lectures about being a racist.
I agree, it's not about race, but the culture itself...
