Six months would make a big difference as the story would no longer be current. Now you can explain to me the importance of notifying the press that evening instead of the next morning?

To the press? Or, specifically, to the White House Press Corps? No, no difference if it wasn't reported until 6 months, or even 6 *years* later. The authorities were informed, within the hour of the occurrence, and *that* is the only legal obligation. Anything above that is not obligated, either legally, civicly, or morally...
