Both figures were painted in lifelike flesh tones, and a hint of dark stubble suggested the general hadn't shaved before reviewing his troops at Valley Forge that morning.

It was common in Washington's time for gentlemen to shave only once a week. Shaving was an arduous task with a straight razor, cold water, and lye soap.
