US and India set to make space pact
Nasa Space Flight ^ | 02/13/06 | Robson Atkinson

Posted on 02/16/2006 6:53:17 PM PST by KevinDavis

The United States could enter into a powerful space pact with India as soon as next month, with President Bush heading to New Delhi for talks that will include the lifting of a ban on sharing space technology.

India's support for the War on Terror have warmed relations between the two countries since Washington imposed sanctions on New Delhi, following nuclear tests in 1998.

India may be the most important strategic ally for the U.S. in the 21st Century.

And in case of space mishap, no escape vehicle is needed. Indian cosmonauts will simply meditate and levitate to safety.

Once again, we curry favor with those who favor curry.

"Hari, we'll give you all the money you need for your space program. You just figure out how to keep the insulating foam from coming off the shuttle. Deal?"

…with President Bush heading to New Delhi for talks that will include the lifting of a ban on sharing space technology.

So, we'll be getting pointers from them? Or they'll finally get to learn all about bad O-rings and cracked tiles?

India may be the most important strategic ally for the U.S. in the 21st Century.

You've barely scratched the surface - it's no secret or surprise that the US and Indian militaries are working and training together (especially both nations' Air Forces).

India faces the same major enemies we do - China and radical Islam. Few other non-English speaking countries share those enemies.

Well that is an excellent developement. The indian space research organisation (ISRO) was suffering from acute shortage of funds.

Hope this venture will improve the bilateral relations betweeen the two countries.

"The United States could enter into a powerful space pact with India as soon as next month,"

Oh goodness I hope not. Why do we just keep on whoring out our technology to potential enemies?

A call to my congressman and senators is in order.

"India a potential enemy???? Why?? "

"In all fairness I would rather have the US work with India than China when it comes to space travel..."

And in all fairness, I would rather have the US work with neither India nor China, both of which are rivals and potential (probable?) enemies in the future.

Neither of those two nations is to be trusted.

We should only work with the EU and Japan, Israel etc. in space research. In other words, countries that will not challenge US global domination, and are true-blue allies of the US.

Unlike India.

"Screw the EU (except for Eastern Europe, Italy, and Great Britain)... Besides competition is good.."

Of course you have no response to any of my statements, nor even a rationale to support your own.

"Besides competition is good.."

So you would give our technology to potentially hostile countries and weaken our advantage just for the sake of competition? Do you want India and China to get to the point where they can challenge the USA?

"India yes.."

There is a word for such sentiments and it is Treason.

care to explain why you would want another country to be able to challenge your own?

The Indo-US cooperation in the area of space dates to the start of Indian space programme. The Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), established in the early 60s, received assistance from the US through the supply of equipment and sounding rockets for carrying out scientific experiments. The very first sounding rocket, a Nike-Apache launched from Thumba on November 21, 1963 was a US made rocket that carried instruments to conduct ionospheric experiments over the earth's magnetic equator that passes over Thumba.

India conducted the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in the mid 1970s for which NASA moved its Application Technology Satellite (ATS-6) over the Indian Ocean. This was followed by the establishment of the multipurpose Indian National Satellite, INSAT, System in the 80s. Today, INSAT has become the largest domestic satellite systems in the Asia Pacific region. India procured all four satellites under the INSAT-1 series from a US company and three were launched by US built vehicles.

In the field of remote sensing, India was one of the first countries to establish a reception station for receiving data from NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), later renamed as LANDSAT. This venture helped India to gain first hand experience in the reception, processing and application of space-based remote sensing data. A number of joint experiment projects in remote sensing were also undertaken using the LANDSAT data with the participation of end users. These efforts helped India decide to design and build its own operational Indian Remote Sensing satellites (IRS) and establish National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) for the application of data from these satellites. Today, India has the world's largest constellation of remote sensing satellites to provide data in a variety of spatial resolutions and spectral bands which is being received by several ground stations from all over the world including USA that meet the requirements of various applications in resources management.

In 1997, the Department of Space (DOS) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) from India and NASA and NOAA from the US signed a Memorandum of Understanding for joint research in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
The India-US conference which was held in Bangalore during June 21-25, 2004 focusssed on strengthening and expanding cooperation. Both India and USA have a successful history of space activities and have their own strengths. There have been a number of instances of successful cooperation and hope this cooperation continues....
regards,
