"The River War" is a great book IMHO. I keep finding reasons to go back and re-read large portions of it 30-odd years after I first read it.

Most people who have only known about the WWII era Churchill as Britain's great Prime Minister may be surprised to learn that in his youth he was a mounted Lancer in the Queen's army who fought in one of the last great cavalry charges in history at the battle of Omdurman.

Yes! Most people don't realize the full length and breadth of this man's career that started before WWI and only think of the cigar-smoking, gruff, bulldog-ish, WWII 'Winston'. He cut a dashing, athletic, figure in his prime that was quintessentially British in the best (Chivalrous, Cultured & Patriotic) sense of the word!
