Years ago, in the Wall Street Journal, there was an opinion piece by a British tabloid reporter who talked about all the stories the British tabloids got right and the mainstream media missed until it was obvious. He said something very interesting in that article, which condemned the mainstream media for it's loss of investigative prowess, reduced to feeding on press releases which they barely question anymore. He said that curiosity should be the minimum basic requirement for a reporter and complained that most journalists no longer have any.
