James Taranto: Angry Left Death Wish (Cheney accident)
WSJ OpinionJournal ^ | Feb. 15, 2006 | James Taranto

Posted on 02/15/2006 8:30:22 PM PST by FairOpinion

Such morbid speculation has crept into the mainstream media as well. A writer for Time magazine offered this last night:

He's 78. He got hit in the face and body by a spray of tiny pellets. He's back in intensive care. It's not inconceivable that the vice-president may have accidentally killed someone. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. I don't know Texas law; and I'm not a lawyer. But wouldn't this be a case of something like negligent homicide?

This morning's New York Times picks up the theme:

In Texas, Carlos Valdez, the district attorney in Kleberg County, said a fatality would immediately spur a new report from the local sheriff and, most likely, a grand jury investigation.

Reports of Whittington's death are greatly exaggerated. A physician who reads this column writes:

Calling the pellet-induced arrhythmia a "heart attack" is a little sensationalist. A "heart attack" is not an official medical term, and is generally taken as meaning a blockage of a significant cardiac artery and resultant damage to the heart. Calling the pellet-induced heart damage a "heart attack" is like calling a bruise a "tissue infarction." The pellet presumably irritated a small area of heart tissue or obstructed a tiny blood vessel.

It sounds, then, as though Whittington has a good heart--which is more than one can say for many in the press and the Angry Left.

Exactly, and as Taranto points out, this speculation and wishful thinking is prevelant not just at the far left websites, but in the MSM as well. They are not reporting news, but their wishful thinking, "IF" Whittington should die, then "...." will happen to Cheney.

President Bush could pardon Cheney(?) and we would have a new VP. Hopefully one that we like and would run for President in '08.

Why should anything happen to Cheney? Clinton raped and assaulted numerous women. Nothing happened to him. In fact NOW (National Orginization for Women) backed Clinton.

Paula Jones was accused of numerous things, from lying, to extortion, to being a right wing attacker. If Whittington dies will the media claim that he really didn't die, or come up with some other excuse to cover Cheney?

I hope they put a strong Secret Service contingent around Whittington, I'd hate him to get the same disease Vince Foster and Ron Brown got.

I find it sickening that the MSM is about to go into paroxysms of joy at the thought that this fellow dies so can they can try to pin it on the VP.

As Rush likes to say, the Left gets wackier when they are out of power.

I think this whole media furor has resulted because the "journalists" feelings were hurt. Yup, they were left out of the loop! (Sarcasm) Why, my God, there just HAS to be something criminal here!!!

Newsflash. Journalists are not elected, I as a taxpayer do not pay their salaries (fortunate for them!). They are not, formally, part of our government, therefore are not/should not be considered on a "first to know" basis. Their behavior has only confirmed their politicized agenda and their misplaced sense of their personal importance.

We should be giving them the same argument they gave us for the Clinton/Lewinski dust-up. "What the VP does on his personal time is his personal business, particularly since Cheney has not perjured himself in a Court of Law."

IIRC, those 2 men "caught the disease" from the "carriers", the Clintons & their loyal cronies.

I highly disbelieve that the Bush-Cheney Administration would act as Mafia-esque.

I wasn't implying anything Bush-Cheney. They would have too much to lose should anything untoward happen to Whittington.

Now Hillary could benefit.

'Fraid not. Negligent homicide (or whatever) isn't a federal crime. Thus, the President couldn't issue a pardon.

Thanks for clearing that up. That's why the (?) is in that statement. Something could be done, couldn't it? Perhaps Governer Perry could issue a pardon? And if he could, would he?

I sincerely hope the Whittington family has invested in Armed Sentries and food tasters, lots of Democrats want Ol Harry dead.

Whittington is apparently going to be OK, so the issue will be rendered moot.

If it came to that, though, I imagine that a.) a grand jury investigation couldn't be averted (and probably shouldn't), but b.) would certainly conclude "accidental death" -- thus bringing the matter to an end.

"Whittington is apparently going to be OK, so the issue will be rendered moot."

The blood lusting media will never let this die. If Whittington dies two years from now they'll try to link this shooting accident to his death.

Let's say, for instance, Whittington dies of a heart attack in late 2007. The msm will 'interview' numerous medical 'experts' who will claim that the shooting weakened Whittington's heart and likely caused it to fail years before it should have. You can't stop ghouls and vampires from loving the taste of blood.

Think about this. Thousands (millions?) of our friends, family, neighbors and co workers are totally unhinged. I believe at this moment there are millions of Americans hoping poor Mr. Whittington dies.

So far the loons have speculated Cheney was drunk. Cheney wanted to off Whittington for some perceived gain through Haliburton. One columnist believes Cheney shot Whittington in order to frighten Scooter Libby from testifying. Then, the latest, says Cheney was having an affair with another member of the hunting Party and was afraid Whittington would inform Lynne.

The Kossacks must realize how this all looks. However, Bush Derangement Syndrome" has them in its grip. They are delusional. Can't help themselves.

In many ways I find this rather entertaining. But, then again, these nuts can't even come up with a good script for "Murder She Wrote."

What if Whittington were to die...

The MSM looks at Cheney from the vantage of his executive duties, which, unless W dies, for most of our history have been a standing joke. There's been, at most, one VP at a time; a number small enough for the MSM to grasp. Yet Cheney has other constitutional duties, legislative ones more often used and not historically laughable. He's President of the Senate, a body with up to 101 members that sometimes vote. Such a large body has created much more historical precedent. Now the MSM may not recall, but I suspect many Freepers can recall roughly when a member of that body last (allegedly accidentally) killed someone. They may even recall the specific Senator and the severe consequences to the nation that followed the tragic event.

He served 37 years, and counting, more in the Senate.
Perhaps the MSM wants to honor precedent and make Cheney VP for life...
