Ga. House: Parents Must OK Clubs Kids Join

ATLANTA -- The Georgia House passed a bill Wednesday that would require students to notify their parents before joining school clubs, a measure that gay rights advocates say will discourage students from joining gay organizations.

The bill, approved 143-25, would also allow parents to block their children from joining clubs they do not approve of. A similar measure is pending in the Senate.

The House oversees schools and is obligated to help parents find out "what's going on with their children," said Republican Rep. Bobby Reese, the bill's sponsor.

Sad that this common sense requires legislation.

Now the schools think parents don't even have a right to know what clubs their kids are in. What are they so afraid of?

...gay rights advocates say will discourage students from joining gay organizations.

Every thing they do just proves that they are all about gaining access to other people's children.

Why did this have to go all the way to the state government? It should have been a standard rule in the schools to begin with. Of course if today's parents were more involved in their children's lives they'd know what peers they were hanging out with.

Pretty sad when you have to start informing parents about club activities in school. The "Gay Club" has supplanted the "Glee Club"--what a shame. Are Bibles still banned from schools?

What kind of gay organization are the students forming? Do students agree to be openly gay in high school and have meetings about how they feel about it? Is it a support group for gay adolescents? I don't get it. Are there straight kids that are longing to join these groups? Are the straight kids not allowed to join? Is this a public school? Do tax dollars pay for this "extra-curricular activity"? Why is legislation needed to control schools?

I'm done.

The school board agreed to allow the club, but administrators recommended eliminating all extracurricular clubs.

If we can't have it our way, then we don't want to do it at all! /dramaqueen voice

I think it's a good idea that parents know what clubs their kids are in. The Glee Club is still there, as is the 4H club, the French Club, the Math Club, and all the other clubs you may remember. Bibles are not banned. Kids can bring their Bibles as they choose. There were only a few cases where some idiot tried to ban Bibles brought to school by students. The courts made short work of those cases.

I can understand not liking a "Gay Club." However, please do keep in mind that the other clubs are still there. All clubs are not "Gay Clubs."

Most of these "Gay Clubs" are Gay-Straight Alliance things. They're sort of support groups. Gay and straight kids can be members. These are public schools they're talking about. Such a club gets the same treatment as the French Club or the Math Club.

I like this idea of having parents OK the clubs their kids are in.

a measure that gay rights advocates say will discourage students from joining gay organizations.

If a parent doesn't want their kids joining certain clubs, the opinions of gay rights activists whould mean squat in such a determination.

Some schools have taken that approach. They just ban all clubs. That seems a shame to me. These Gay/Straight Alliance Clubs are usually really small and pretty innocuous. Kids telling each other they're OK.

It's a shame to kill all those good clubs to get rid of one you don't like.

I doubt this rule would apply to 18 year-olds.
