Now if Saddam was truly byzantine, he would cut a deal with the US to spare his life for exchange for coming clean on the whole deal.

But I do believe that he feels that his life is virtually over and his sons are dead, therefore he is more interested in his place in history as a great Arab leader than in living out his declining years like Noriega.
